US Reaction to Iran's Peace Proposal and Escalating Tensions

The United States just called Iran’s latest peace proposal “insufficient.” That’s the latest from the talks, and it just ramps up the worry that Washington might actually start striking again if Tehran doesn’t move.

Axios got wind of this, citing some senior official and another source. They basically said the White House felt that 14-point deal wasn't a meaningful step forward. It was just token improvements over what they’d already rejected before.

Remember, Iran sent this new 14-point peace package to the US. It looked awfully familiar, almost like the offers Washington has already tossed out. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed that Tehran managed to get its views across, apparently through Pakistan. But no specifics. Nothing concrete.

The real tension, though, is that this reaction comes right when Trump is reportedly weighing whether to restart the war against Iran. That’s because Tehran is refusing to budge on key demands, especially regarding its nuclear program .

Officials are expecting Trump to pull his top national security team into the Situation Room on Tuesday. They need to figure out military options.

There’s a clear line being drawn. One official told Axios that if Iran doesn't shift its position, the US will have to continue the negotiations. And they said that means going “through bombs.” That’s a shame, obviously.

“We are really not making a lot of progress,” the official said. “We are at a very serious place today. The pressure is on them to be responsive in the right way.” He paused there. “It’s time for the Iranians to throw bit of candy out. We need some real, sturdy, and granular conversation about the nuclear program .” If that doesn’t happen, they warned, “we will have a conversation through bombs, which will be a shame.”

This all happened after the New York Times reported that the US and Israel are getting ready to resume military operations against Iran. That’s happening amid all this stalling diplomacy.

The new Iranian proposal tried to address the nuclear issue, but it skipped the details. It talked about not pursuing a nuclear weapon, sure. But there were zero concrete commitments about suspending uranium enrichment or handing over any of the highly enriched uranium they already have. That’s a big gap.

Meanwhile, Iran is claiming some wins. They asserted that the US aGreed to release a quarter of the frozen funds they have sitting in foreign banks. They also claimed the US temporarily waived sanctions on Iran’s oil. But the US side is sticking to the line: no sanctions relief happens without something coming back from the US first.

The negotiations have hit a breaking point. They kept demanding Iran settle things quickly or face serious consequences. Trump himself posted on Truth Social Sunday that Iran had to move fast, adding that “the clock is ticking,” and that “there won’t be anything left.” It’s getting desperate.
