US Sanctions and the Iranian Procurement Network

US Sanctions and the Iranian Procurement Network

The US just dropped sweeping new sanctions. It’s all about this "sophisticated Iranian procurement network ." They’re accused of getting sensitive military tech through pure deception and dodging sanctions.

State Department deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the network managed to impersonate and totally defraud dozens of American tech companies. They secured equipment worth millions for Iran’s defense sector. Think spectrum analyzers . Security detection devices . All smuggled in.

How did they pull it off? AFP reported that they used fake websites. Websites that looked exactly like legitimate American companies. Then they used intermediaries in Dubai to move the shipments. Smuggling the tech right into Iran. It all seems to have been orchestrated by someone named Ali Majd Sepehr, based in Iran.

And it’s not just about this network. The Treasury Department also hit 10 other individuals and companies. They spanned West Asia, Asia, and Eastern Europe. All accused of backing Iran’s military buying. This is part of President Trump’s whole "Economic Fury" campaign. It’s the broader "maximum pressure" strategy. Aimed squarely at slowing down Iran’s weapons programs.

The focus here is on groups like the Center for Progress and Development of Iran. Formerly the Center for Innovation and Technology Cooperation. Washington claims this group, CDPI, was coordinating all the tech and weapons acquisitions for Iran.

Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent put it plainly. He said, “While the surviving IRGC leaders are trapped like rats in a sinking ship, the Treasury Department is unrelenting in our Economic Fury campaign.”

He went on, adding that under President Trump’s leadership, they will keep acting. They will target anyone providing Iran with weapons meant for use against US forces.

The list of targets was heavy. China-based Yushita Shanghai International Trade Co Ltd . Hitex Insulation Ningbo Company Limited . Hong Kong groups too. AE International Trade Co Limited , HK Hesin Industry Co Limited , and Mustad Limited . Plus the Belarus-based Armoury Alliance LLC . Several people got designated, too. They allegedly helped facilitate these procurement activities on Iran’s behalf.

The real meat of it, the stuff the Treasury was really focusing on, involved the actual hardware. They said some of these targets helped get components for the Shahed-series drones . And ballistic missiles.

Then there was the Pishgam Electronic Safeh Company . Iran-based. This one got sanctioned too. The accusation here was sourcing servomotors. Parts recovered from downed Shahed-136 drones. Stuff for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The whole thing, according to the Treasury, is part of that renewed "maximum pressure" strategy. It’s aimed at stopping missile development. Stopping weapon buying. And trying to limit Iran’s regional military influence.

It’s a messy picture, isn't it? Not just a clean line of events. Just a lot of moving parts and accusations flying around. The system seems designed to keep things complicated.

The property and interests linked to these designated people and companies? Blocked. That’s the immediate fallout. But the secondary sanctions threat looms. Any foreign financial institution that deals with these targets? They risk getting hit too.

It feels like a relentless push. A strategy that doesn't pause. Just keep squeezing. Keep the pressure on. The reality is that these networks are trying to operate in the shadows. Using fake names and shell companies. Trying to bypass the rules. It’s a constant game of evasion and accusation. And the US is throwing everything they have at it. It’s just a huge, complicated web of trade, technology, and sheer geopolitical pressure. You watch it unfold, and you realize how much things shift when the pressure finally mounts. It’s not neat. It’s just noise and consequence.
