Vijay Tamil Nadu Assembly Floor Test and Political Chaos

Vijay Tamil Nadu Assembly Floor Test is happening now. The newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government is trying to prove it has the majority in the Assembly today. Chief Minister Vijay was meeting with the leaders of the parties that are backing him, trying to pull the support together before this test.

The floor test is underway in the assembly. The political parties are participating in the proceedings right now.

Numbers and Obstacles

How are the numbers actually stacking up for Vijay?

Right now, the TVK has 107 seats. That’s after Chief Minister Vijay stepped down from the Tiruchirappali East seat. They also have the backing of 13 MLAs from Congress , IUML , VCK , CPI , and CPM .

But there’s a snag. TVK MLA Srinivasa Sethupathi has been stopped by the Madras High Court. He can’t participate in the floor test as an MLA. That’s one less vote that could have helped Vijay pass things.

Then there’s S Kamaraj, the AMMK MLA. He also extended his support to Vijay’s TVK . He changed his tune, stepping away from those earlier forgery allegations.

So, the total? Chief Minister Vijay’s TVK now has 120 MLAs for this test.

Legal Intervention

TVK MLA Sethupathi is the sticking point. Just the day before the test, the Madras High Court stepped in. They restrained him from taking part in the floor test as an MLA.

Sethupathi had won the Tiruppattur seat by just one vote against the DMK leader Periyakaruppan in the assembly elections.

Periyakaruppan went to the High Court. He alleged that there were irregularities in the vote counting. Things like a postal ballot being rejected and mistakenly sent elsewhere.

The high court issued an interim order. It stopped Sethupathi from voting or participating in any floor test, confidence motion, no-confidence motion, or any other proceedings until they decide further.

This whole situation is getting messy.

Political Pushback and Fracturing

Chief Minister Vijay also faced pushback from his allies after he made some appointments. He brought in an astrologer, Radhan Pandit Vettrivel, and an Officer on Special Duty, or OSD, to the Chief Minister’s side.

The astrologer had predicted a landslide win for Vijay. But this move didn't sit well with the allies. Congress , for instance, opposed this step.

Sasikanth Senthil, a Congress MP, spoke to X about it. He said, “Beats me. Why would an astrologer need an OSD position? Can anyone explain it?”

VCK general secretary D Ravikumar was sharper. “This is unacceptable in a secular government. The Honourable Chief Minister needs to reconsider this.”

Meanwhile, the AIADMK is fracturing. It’s staring at a split because of all this political chaos.

On May 12th, a group of MLAs revolted against Edappadi K Palaniswami, the AIADMK chief. They accused him of trying to team up with their arch-rival, the DMK . These MLAs then threw their support behind Vijay’s government before the floor test.

About 30 MLAs, led by SP Velumani and C Ve Shanmugam, are reportedly in this rebel camp. They’re questioning Palaniswami’s leadership now, especially after the party lost the assembly elections.

This floor test for the TVK government has turned into a real litmus test for the AIADMK .
