Vijay's Letter to the Governor and the Hurdle for Chief Minister Job

That whole situation with Vijay’s letter to the Governor on May 6, it really seems to have become a massive stumbling block for him trying to get that Chief Minister job in Tamil Nadu. News reports are saying it’s proving to be a huge hurdle.

And get this, the political debutant, the guy leading the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam , he was actually advised to dodge it. All you need to know about how this played out.

Look, despite the party, TVK, which is now the single largest group with 108 seats in this debut election, the Governor has basically turned him back twice. Why? Because Vijay couldn't show that clear majority. He just didn't have the 118 seats needed.

Political experts, stuff like India Today, they pointed out the error wasn't just a slip-up. It was twofold, how Vijay framed his claim to the Governor.

First, instead of just starting by claiming the largest party—you know, the 108 TVK MLAs—he actually submitted a list that included signatures from Congress MLAs.

That’s where things got messy. By throwing those outside names in there, he effectively staked a claim for a coalition government. Not just an independent TVK administration. That gave Governor Rajendra Arlekar the grounds to insist on seeing a confirmed list of 118 signatures before even considering an invitation.

KA Sengottaiyan, who is one of the senior leaders in Vijay’s team—a nine-time MLA who jumped ship from AIADMK in 2025 to join TVK—he reportedly told the party to just submit the 108 TVK names first. To assert dominance. But the party went with the combined list instead.

Meanwhile, Vijay’s actual reported support? It stands around 112 to 113 MLAs. That just doesn't cut it. He’s still five or six seats short of that magic number.

The Governor, he’s reportedly really unconvinced. He’s rejected requests for a swearing-in until that full majority is actually demonstrated in a written list. It’s all stalled.

That means chasing those smaller parties, like the VCK or the Left parties. Trying to hit that 118 mark.

Just to keep Vijay out of power.
