Vijay's Meeting with PM Modi and the Cauvery Water Dispute

Vijay met Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi this Wednesday. It was his first official trip to the capital since taking over as Chief Minister earlier this month. He brought a whole stack of demands with him.

The core of the discussion, obviously, revolved around Tamil Nadu .

He handed the Prime Minister a memorandum. It laid out some serious, long-pending demands. Financial support. Infrastructure projects. Clearances for things that need doing. And, most importantly, intervention in that messy Mekedatu water dispute.

The tension there was thick.

The Chief Minister was pretty clear. He strongly pushed back against Karnataka’s plan for the Mekedatu dam. He insisted that Tamil Nadu’s rights over the Cauvery water had to be protected. If they let that project go ahead, it would ruin the state’s drinking water and irrigation supplies. He pushed Modi hard. No permission for Mekedatu without Tamil Nadu’s say.

That water fight is old, you know. It’s been a political headache between the two southern states for ages.

The state government also asked for more help. They wanted central assistance for all the ongoing development work. Faster approvals for projects. Anything related to urban stuff, transport, industry—they needed the central push.

Mekedatu was right in the middle of all this. It’s about that balancing reservoir across the Cauvery . Tamil Nadu consistently fought against it. They argued it would mess up their share of the river water.

Vijay had actually written to Modi before too. Asking the Centre to hold back clearances for that dam. Asking for protection under the Cauvery tribunal framework.

But the trip wasn't just about water. There’s more happening behind the scenes.

He’s probably going to follow up on the money stuff next. He needs to talk to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman . Trying to get more central allocations for the state projects.

And he’ll likely meet Amit Shah too. The Union Home Minister.

There are other political players waiting. Vijay is expected to chat with some of the big Congress names. Sonia Gandhi , Rahul Gandhi . Just some wider political consultations happening in Delhi .

It’s a big moment for Vijay. He shot up fast. Before all this, he was just a cinema star. Then he launched the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in 2024. Suddenly, he became this huge force in the state.

The anti-incumbency feeling was huge. Welfare campaigning. Tapping into the youth and first-time voters. That’s how he won the recent assembly elections. And now he’s the Chief Minister. A real shift.
