Vikram Bhatt on His Time in Jail and Reconnecting with India

Vikram Bhatt opened up about those seventy days he spent locked up in Udaipur jail. It was all connected to a spat over making a biopic about Indira Murdia, the late wife of Ajay Murdia, the founder of Indira IVF. He talked about the friendships he found behind bars, the health nightmare he went through, and how it shifted his view of what he called "the India that watches our films."

He recalled being stuck in a barrack with some other inmates. It really changed how he saw people, class, connection.

Vikram Bhatt Recalls Life Inside Udaipur Jail

He shared that he was sharing space with sixty to eighty people. And he was genuinely surprised by the kindness they showed him.

He said, “I was staying in a barrack with 60 to 80 people. But I saw a different India there.” He found out what friendship actually means. They didn't let him do anything, sure. But they brought him food. Took care of his clothes. They called him Bhishma Pitamah . Then they’d just tell him to sit and tell them a horror story. Every night, about sixty or sixty-five people would gather around, asking him for tales.

The support wasn't just from the other inmates though. He mentioned that some prison officials and constables were kind too.

He spoke about how things got really rough physically there. His health took a serious hit during his time inside. Vikram suffers from an autoimmune condition—axial spondyloarthritis—joint and muscle pain, you know? The winter months mixed with the jail conditions made everything worse.

“I almost died there,” he said. “I have this condition. Pain in my joints and muscles. You sleep on a mat on the floor. It was December, January. Extremely cold.”

He also mentioned developing jaundice while he was there. He repeatedly asked the authorities to get him to a hospital. At night, the fever from the cold would hit hard. The people in his barrack would give him their blankets. But he kept shivering. They’d say they didn't have enough guards or security arrangements needed for that.

He felt like they weren't going to help him fast enough. So he shifted gears. He started a really strict diet and prayed hard.

“I felt they were never going to take me,” he said. “So I stopped eating oily food completely. Just gram, water, fruits. Slowly, I started getting better.” He added that this experience made him connect with God.

When he got out, some people from the film industry reached out. Mithun da called him up. Some others did too. Sanjay Dutt even called him, even though they’d never worked together. He thanked them for that. But when asked about Akshay Kumar? Vikram dismissed it. “Why would he call me? He isn't my friend.”

He talked a lot about how the jail time helped him reconnect with a part of India he felt disconnected from over the years. It was like a reset button.

“When you’re inside with these people, who else are you going to talk to?” He asked. “If you don't become friends, then with whom will you? For me, it was an opportunity to reconnect with an India I had lost touch with.” He insisted this was the India that watches our films. He got to meet that side of people again. It was a refresher course on how they think, what they believe in, even their reaction to ghost stories. These are the ones watching us on screen.

The legal stuff still hung over things. Vikram and his wife were arrested back in December 2025. The whole thing boiled down to a dispute over a proposed biopic about Indira Murdia. Ajay Murdia had met Vikram in Mumbai back in April 2024, talking about the film based on his late wife’s life and his work with infertility treatment.

The complaint claimed they argued over money, eventually leading to legal action. But Vikram basically said it was nonsense. He felt the chargesheet was bizarre. They just haven't proven anything. It’s all in court now. He said whatever he says today, people will think he’s just defending himself. He trusts that the truth will come out.

And on the work side? He’s gearing up for Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past . Starring Mimoh Chakraborty and Chetna Pande. Scheduled for June 12th release.
