Wetland Emergency and Action Against Pollution

The Centre moved fast. really fast.

Maharashtra authorities were told to start fixing things immediately.

The complaint itself came from the NatConnect Foundation on World Water Day, March 22. It pointed out the awful state of three specific spots in Nerul: DPS Lake, NRI Lake, and TS Chanakya Lake.

Their existence depends on these areas being healthy.

Then there were the tests. The organization commissioned scientific checks. Water samples taken by a private lab in Thane just didn't pass. The numbers were alarming.

And chemical oxygen demand. Both were high. The pH level? It shot up past 9. Strong alkalinity.

They demanded an action taken report. And that report had to go to both the Centre and the original complainant.

The rules themselves are pretty clear, actually. They forbid dumping untreated waste. They stop the dumping of debris. They forbid any activity that messes with the natural character of wetlands. Authorities now have to figure out if these violations are what caused this mess. And then they have to act.

Experts are calling it a wetland emergency . That’s the word.

One of the biggest problems they highlighted was the tidal flow. It’s broken. The natural flushing mechanism is gone. This means pollutants just sit there. They accumulate. Stagnation.

Now it’s up to the State Authority. How quickly can they actually fix these zones? How effectively can they restore something so sensitive, something that supports so much life? That’s the real focus now.
