Employee Salary Deduction and Labor Policy in Kochi

A guy in Kochi, Kerala. managerial stuff. joined a company there. then he found out his salary got cut for taking approved leave. totally shocked.

He dumped it all on social media. asked people what to do about this weird policy. some were already saying, “This is definitely not normal.”

He posted his whole mess. the details started coming out in that Reddit thread.

He said he joined that Kochi company four months ago. remember? they offered him eighteen thousand rupees a month for the first two months. probation period stuff. then it jumped to twenty thousand after that finished.

He claimed he actually asked about leave when he interviewed. that’s where things got tangled.

“During the interview, I specifically asked about leave,” he wrote. “They told me I would get fifteen days of leave per year. It was in my offer letter.”

Then came the part where it felt wrong. During probation, he took three days off and his salary went down. He figured that made sense because he was still probating. But after probation ended? Took some more time off. And still getting cut. That’s when the real shock hit him.

The HR folks finally laid out their system. deducting money for leaves. then they pay it back at the end of the year. calculate everything based on how much leave was taken.

He shared that bit online. “When I asked HR about it, they just said this is how the company works.”

Apparently, fifteen days annual leave. but every time you take a day off, salary gets cut. Then at year-end, they figure out the total and reimburse it separately.

This whole setup? never mentioned during the interview or when he started. He thought, if he had known this, he’d have handled things differently.

He pushed back slightly. “I told them that deductions only make sense if I took more than those fifteen days of annual leave. But they just wouldn't budge.” And there was another thing even when he was on leave, they expected him to still handle work. No consideration for that part. Nothing.

So what does a person do? He posted the real question then. “What should I do now? Should I demand the policy in writing? Go raise it formally with HR? Or just start looking for somewhere else?” People jumped in fast. Advice started pouring in.

One person was immediate. “This is not normal at all, man. I don’t think you get that money back either. Sounds shady. You need to check your contract immediately.”

Another one went straight to the legal angle. Earned leaves exist. Or whatever leave labor laws mandate? That stuff has to be paid. It just doesn't make sense legally. Wouldn’t stand up in court. Suggested he find a better job instead.

Then there was the warning about legality. “This might actually be illegal. You should consult with the local labor office.”
