Experiential Tourism: Inside the Prison-Like Setting of "Feel the Jail"

Hyderabad just rolled out something wild. A first. Ordinary folks can actually spend time inside a prison-like setting. It’s called “Feel the Jail,” or “Jail Anubhavam.”

The whole thing kicked off with a big ceremony. Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla officially opened it up at the old Chanchalguda Central Jail. Experiential tourism, they called it.

What’s the deal? Visitors get to voluntarily stay in specially designed cells. Twelve hours for a thousand rupees. Twenty-four hours for two thousand.

But it’s more than just a photo op. The people running this claim it’s meant to be educational. A way to understand prison life. Discipline. Rehabilitation. The sheer weight of personal freedom.

The setup itself is pretty stark. People follow routines inside. They stay in rooms with iron grills. Simple bedding. Barely any amenities. It’s meant to recreate that atmosphere.

Some reports mention the details. One cell setup involved a single bed with a navy-blue sheet. An earthen water pot. A tiny washroom. It’s trying to hit that grim reality of prison living, you know? While keeping things safe, apparently.

And they didn't stop there. They also opened up a new Jail Museum inside the complex. This museum seems to trace history. How correctional systems evolved. From the Nizams way to the modern setup.

It fits into that weird category, prison tourism. Or dark tourism. People flocking to places associated with punishment, crime, or just history of incarceration. It’s not new. Other places have done this. Old prisons turned into these kinds of heritage spots.

But the reaction online? That was a whole other story.

The internet went absolutely nuts. Social media flooded with jokes. Memes. Pure sarcasm about the whole concept.

You see comments like, “I’ll rather beat my enemies than pay to experience jail.” Seriously.

Then you get the darker stuff. Some people were joking about the cost, the experience itself. “For an extra five hundred rupees they will also tie you up and beat you!!!” That kind of joke floating around.

There were comments about wanting to see someone else experience it. “Please put my ex there for a jail experience so he knows where he’s ending up if he doesn’t learn how to behave.”

And then the absurdities. People were asking practical things. “Couples allowed?” “Will we get AC?” It just turned into a massive trending discussion.

It’s a bizarre mix. A serious educational attempt bumping right up against pure, dark humor. The whole thing is just… messy.
