Fuel Price Hike: Regional Disparities and State Tax Impact

The fuel price hike hit, but things are still messy across the country. Some cities, though, are managing to keep rates lower than the big metros—Hyderabad, Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram, you name it. It’s a real contrast, isn't it?

The hike itself, up to three point sixty rupees a litre on May 15th, came amid all that global crude oil drama. Supply worries tied to the West Asia crisis, the whole thing is just piling up. But some cities managed to dodge the full brunt of that increase, thanks to lower state taxes. That’s the kicker.

Chandigarh, for instance, came out on top. It was the cheapest spot among the major markets for both petrol and diesel after the revision. Petrol there was at ninety-seven point twenty-seven rupees a litre, up from the previous rate. Diesel followed suit, jumping by two point eighty. And those diesel rates were seriously lower than several other state capitals where prices were already pushing ninety-five.

New Delhi, the capital, also managed to stay relatively affordable. Petrol jumped three rupees to ninety-seven point seventy-seven. Diesel followed suit, hitting ninety point sixty-seven.

Lucknow stayed relatively accessible for people there too. Petrol there was ninety-seven point fifty-eight rupees. Diesel went up three point oh one, landing at ninety point eighty-seven.

But look at Noida and Gurgaon. They definitely felt the pinch. In Noida, petrol climbed to ninety-eight point zero four. Diesel went up to ninety-one point thirty-one. Gurgaon was below the hundred mark for petrol, sitting at ninety-eight point twenty-nine after that two point nine nine increase. Diesel there was ninety point seventy-seven.

Then you get the western cities. Ahmedabad kept things relatively tame. Before this latest bump, petrol there was already sitting below ninety-five. It seems the state taxes really make a difference, doesn't it?

It’s wild how much these prices just shift around depending on where you are. Hyderabad, on the other hand, ended up with the highest petrol price among the major hubs, hitting one hundred ten point eighty-nine per litre. And Thiruvananthapuram? That place had the highest diesel rate, nearly one hundred, ninety-nine point sixty-three.

This difference isn't just about the hike. It's about the state levies, the local taxes, and all that transportation cost messing things up. Analysts keep pointing out that cities with lighter state taxes still offer some kind of breathing room for the consumers, even when crude oil is flying around at these high levels.

And the oil marketing companies? They’re really struggling right now. They’re wrestling with those under-recoveries because the crude prices are just elevated everywhere. It feels like the system is just absorbing the shock, but the local reality is still uneven. It’s all shifting around, you know?
