Viral Video Exposes Dowry Exchange in Ghaziabad

A video just blew up online. It’s this clip from a wedding in Ghaziabad. Allegedly, it shows an open exchange of massive amounts—crores—in dowry.

The man in the video is proudly announcing what he received from the groom’s side. Things like a BMW , and over one crore in cash. It’s a spectacle.

This whole thing immediately reignited the old arguments about dowry in India. Even with the laws in place, people are still talking about this.

The clip itself is what caught everyone’s attention. He was reportedly heard declaring, “1 BMW, 1 crore, 1 lakh, 11 thousand in cash.” And people gathered around, looking visibly impressed by the announcement.

It spread fast on social media. Strong reactions followed. Lots of people were criticizing the public celebration of dowry. Demands for tougher enforcement of the anti-dowry laws were popping up everywhere.

The law is there. Dowry was banned since 1961 with the Dowry Prohibition Act. Giving or taking it is illegal. It carries jail time, maybe six months to two years, plus fines.

But the video? Who knows if it’s real. The authenticity is totally unverified. It just got shared on X, by an account called ‘yuva_aas’. It already has over 174,000 views.

The caption attached to the post was pretty blunt. It basically laid out the exchange: “1 BMW, 1 crore, 1 lakh, 11 thousand in cash—the girl’s family gave to the boy as dowry. The community’s ruin starts right from here; there must be some limit to taking or giving dowry.”

The comments section got flooded with mixed stuff. People just reacted.

“I don’t get why families give one crore to the groom just for marrying their daughter. Why not use that money to start a business worth one crore? Or if she doesn’t want to run a business, they could buy her property worth a crore. Why hand it over to the groom?” one user wrote.

Then you get the pushback on the cultural side. “We need to get rid of this pajeeetism from our community. It’s not a huge deal in Pakistan maybe, but here in India, it’s a massive issue.”

Another comment brought in a whole different angle. It got really pointed. “In the Subcontinent, we follow whatever pleases us. They do the Haldi , they do the Mehndi , they take the Dahej , they play songs, there’s the barat , and eventually they deny when someone asks them to say Jai Shri Ram! Why can’t you? You’re doing all those things!”

Some people looked really uncomfortable with the public display. One user said, “And the worst part is that the guy announcing it looks so religious. He’s doing something that isn’t allowed in Islam. Astagfirullah.”

Other users just mocked the whole extravagance. “Might as well give him a set of bangles and a saree,” one posted sarcastically.

There was the argument about economic pressure too. Another person commented, “Stop making marriages so expensive. Poor people won’t be able to get their daughter married off with those dowries.”

It really felt like a mess. Not just a legal issue. A lot of social pressure boiling over online.
