Ambedkar Jayanti and Political Vote Banks

April 14th. Ambedkar Jayanti .

Parties, all of them, are trying to grab onto that big chunk of twenty-one percent Dalit votes . It’s a real push.

The ruling BJP, they’ve got plans. Grand plans, actually. They announced a scheme to beautify—and renovate—Ambedkar statues across the state. And other Dalit icons too.

Through their PDA platform—Pichda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak—they are making serious efforts to woo that community. It’s a calculated effort.

And don't forget the BSP. Mayawati is still there. She’s got that sway, especially over the Jatav vote bank among Dalits.

The Congress is also holding meetings, scattered across the state, trying to connect.

It’s all tied up with the bigger picture. As the state gets closer to the 2027 elections, this birth anniversary isn't just a commemoration. It’s become grounds for political one-upmanship. Every party wants that vote. It’s a sizeable bloc, you have to admit.

The BSP, for instance. Only one assembly seat in '22. But Mayawati still holds that influence. That’s important.

The shift in votes has been noticeable. The BSP used to rely on that Dalit base, but things have changed. There’s been a slight drift, towards the BJP and the SP.

The BJP certainly benefited from the Modi wave in '14 and '17. They got a big piece of those Dalit votes then. But the SP, they managed to make some inroads too. A surprise performance, if you ask me, in the 2024 polls. The SP and Congress alliance grabbed forty-four seats out of eighty. They rode that wave of OBC, Dalit, and minority votes.

That OBC-Dalit-minority vote bank. That’s what Akhilesh Yadav is targeting now with his PDA plank. It’s the angle.

Trying to connect directly with the community there.

The government itself has made a move. They passed a Cabinet resolution this week. They want to beautify and renovate Ambedkar statues everywhere. All 403 assembly segments. Ten spots in each constituency. They’re putting government funds toward this. Functions will happen across the state.

And the BJP plans to keep this momentum going. Right up until those 2027 assembly polls. Regular events. Keeping the visibility high. It’s a strategy. A way to stay relevant.
