Karnataka Leadership Pushback on Election Commission over Guarantee Schemes

Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, the Karnataka leadership, launched a real pushback on the Election Commission and the BJP on Tuesday. It all kicked off because the poll body asked for details about the money released under the state’s guarantee schemes while the bypoll period was happening.
The Congress side immediately framed this as something much bigger. They alleged the BJP had actually written to the Election Commission trying to stop the installment payments for these welfare schemes.
“The BJP sent a letter to the EC objecting to the release of funds for the guarantee schemes,” he said. “This is clearly an attempt to block these programs through the Commission. It’s an attack on the poor and the unemployed youth. Voters will give them a fitting reply.”
He brought up the sheer scale of the spending too. The Congress government had poured over one point two five lakh crore into these guarantee schemes just over the last two and a half years. He insisted, of course, that all payments were legal.
“Our schemes aren't some election-time announcement,” he continued. “We’ve been paying people within the law. That BJP letter? It proves their conspiracy to stop the programs meant to protect the poor who are struggling with rising prices.”
Shivakumar also made a promise. He assured the beneficiaries there was no reason to panic about the payments continuing.
“The money was released until last month. This month’s installment? It will come after the elections. The guarantee schemes won't stop. We stand by what we said,” he insisted.
Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah stepped in with his own strong statement. He questioned the Election Commission’s move to dig into the guarantee scheme payments. He called the whole approach “suspicious and discriminatory.”
He tried to set the record straight. The schemes weren't something launched just for the bypoll period. They were promises made during the 2023 Assembly elections.
“Our guarantee schemes aren't introduced during elections,” he clarified. “They are programs that were implemented based on the promises made in 2023. Funds are moving regularly and transparently to the people who need them.”
Then he hit back at the EC’s perceived bias. He claimed the Election Commission showed double standards by not asking about similar schemes in other states.
“Look at Maharashtra and Bihar,” he pointed out. “Cash transfer schemes were announced and put into action before elections, yet the EC stayed quiet. That isn’t impartial. It shows bias.”
He suggested that scrutinizing Karnataka’s schemes felt like an indirect attack. “Targeting Karnataka’s guarantee schemes isn't just political,” he added. “It’s an indirect attack on the poor, on women, and on the people of Karnataka.”
The whole thing boiled down to the trigger. The controversy started when the Election Commission actually wrote to the Karnataka government. They asked for details on the funds released under these schemes during the bypolls in Davangere and Bagalkot.
That move followed a complaint.
The Congress government, though, stuck to their line. They argued these schemes were part of normal governance, not election incentives. Withholding payments, they argued, would unfairly hurt lakhs of beneficiaries.
As campaigning ramps up in Davangere and Bagalkot, the guarantee schemes have become this big political flashpoint. It’s a real fight between the ruling Congress and the BJP over how these welfare measures should be handled.
Congress sees these schemes as a major welfare model. The BJP, on the other hand, keeps questioning the timing and if the money is even sustainable.
Now, whatever the Election Commission decides in response to the state government’s explanation is going to be huge. It shapes the next move in this whole mess.
