What started so simply. Finding a suspicious pile of cash tucked away in a washroom inside the Ram Mandir complex in Ayodhya.
That little discovery snowballed fast into one of the biggest donation theft scandals ever linked to the temple. It’s unbelievable how that happened.
A Times of India report suggested it was just a security guard noticing something. Forty thousand rupees, hidden there. But it was enough. Enough to expose what investigators now think was a really well-organized racket siphoning off devotees’ donations over several months.
Then things got serious. The discovery pushed people to look closer. They pulled up CCTV footage from the donation counting area. What they saw wasn't just one bundle. It was much more. Members of the cash-counting team, apparently, were seen hiding currency right on their person while handling donations.
Investigators started looking at how this money moved. The accused followed a simple pattern, but it was carefully planned. They took stolen cash stolen during the counting process and they hid it inside washrooms in the complex. Then they pulled it out slowly. Small batches. Enough time to avoid catching eyes from security or colleagues.
This method let them keep moving money out without immediately raising a red flag. It was sneaky.
The fallout was huge. The temple Trust had to launch a full probe. They looked into everything. And in that process, they managed to recover some cash and valuables. Apparently, eighty lakh rupees was officially shown as recovered before the whole mess got public.
So far, eight people connected to the donation counting process have been arrested. They found more than just cash; jewelry too. Even a vehicle allegedly bought with misappropriated funds came into play. Police are digging deep now. Examining about fifty bank accounts linked to these accused and their relatives trying to trace that money trail.
It seems this theft didn't stop there, though. Investigators think it could have gone on for months. The exact total amount stolen probably never gets fully known because the records are incomplete. And just think about the sheer volume of donations coming in daily at the temple. It’s staggering.
The probe also uncovered some serious procedural failures. There were alleged lapses in how donations were handled. Earlier findings pointed toward one key accused who allegedly had unauthorized access to the keys for the donation boxes. That immediately raised questions about who was supervising things, and whether they missed it entirely. Did others involved in counting or supervision just ignore these thefts?
In response to all this mess, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust is now making massive changes. They’re tightening security around every single part of the donation process. They’ve beefed up surveillance. New monitoring protocols are being introduced. The whole cash collection system has been revamped. It’s all about cutting down on where people can intervene or cause financial chaos again.
These reforms feel necessary now. They aim to rebuild some trust among the devotees who have donated so much. After everything that happened with this embezzlement, they need to feel secure.
