Koel Mallick's Political Shift and West Bengal Politics

Koel Mallick stepping down from her Rajya Sabha seat without showing up for a single day in Parliament has really stirred things up in West Bengal politics. It’s just… unprecedented stuff, you know?

There was chatter immediately about where she might go next. Some folks were talking about joining something like the Nationalist Citizens Party of India the NCPI, maybe. But things have shifted fast over the last twenty-four hours. The current feeling leans much more toward the BJP .

That kind of indication came from Sukanta Majumdar, Union Minister of State for Education and a senior leader in the Bengal BJP. He basically shut down the idea that Koel would just vanish from politics. He said something like, "Just as those three MPs who resigned before eventually got back into Parliament, she’ll return the same way."

It makes you wonder about the others involved too. Think about Sushmita Dev, Prakash Chik Baraik, and Sukhendu Sekhar Roy three former Trinamool Congress MPs. They all ended up with the BJP recently. And within hours of that shift, they were fielded from the Upper House. It’s a pattern emerging.

And then there’s the NCPI itself. That group has backing from twenty Lok Sabha MPs. Most of them are ex-TMC folks who merged into the new party after those 2026 assembly elections. They’re pushing for separate spots, trying to be an independent bloc in the Lok Sabha. Naturally, they line up with the NDA alliance now. Sudip Bandyopadhyay is expected to lead them down in the Lok Sabha; Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar should be the chief whip.

Koel’s resignation letter? It was really quiet. Just a thanks to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat for their cooperation during her short time there. But stepping away completely, not participating at all… that suggests it wasn't a long-term commitment to the TMC anymore. It felt more like a temporary arrangement.

She hasn't said anything about where she’s going next. She’s been very quiet to the media in Delhi through Thursday. Still, you get the sense that this migration to the saffron camp isn’t just a possibility now. It feels like it’s just a matter of when.

The signals are pointing clearly toward the BJP . Not the NCPI.

Remember those discussions Koel had? She met up with some senior BJP leadership, including Union Minister Bhupender Yadav. Yadav was instrumental in getting them into power during the 2026 Bengal Assembly elections. He’s a big power center in Delhi, that kind of influence. It gets interesting when you look at who was meeting whom.

Even those TMC Lok Sabha rebels like Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Satabdi Roy, Mala Roy, and Yusuf Pathan they all met Yadav in Delhi before joining the NCPI fold or whatever came next. Sources around both Delhi and Kolkata are saying this whole meeting thing is part of a bigger political realignment happening after the change of guard in Bengal. It’s all moving.
