Train Accident Involves School Students in Murshidabad

Three people died. Two of them were school students. This happened after a local train smashed into a pool car at a railway level crossing in Murshidabad district on Friday morning, officials reported.
The whole thing went down near Karna Subarna railway station. It was about 7 am when the crash occurred. That spot is actually about forty-eight kilometers from Katwa, deep in the Eastern Railway network.
Local folks were quick to point fingers, though. They said the gate at the crossing was left wide open when the terrible crash happened. The gateman got arrested after the incident, according to railway sources.
What the visuals showed of the pool car was just awful. It was extensively damaged. Windows shattered everywhere. The front section looked mangled. The windshield was completely smashed. The roof was torn apart by the impact. Meanwhile, people were hurt. They were rushed to the Karnasubarna Block Hospital for treatment.
The story behind it is that this pool car was carrying school children. They were trying to cross the rail lines when the train hit them right there in Berhampore. An Eastern Railway official explained it like this: “The pool car, carrying those students heading to school, was crossing the rail lines at the level crossing gate near Karna Subarna station... when the local train hit the vehicle.”
Railway authorities are looking into what went wrong now. They sent a ten-member team to the site to figure out the cause of the whole accident.
And yeah, operations got messed up too. Train movement on the Azimganj-Katwa section of the Eastern Railway’s Howrah division stopped for a while.
They did manage some compensation. Railway sources mentioned that they declared ten lakh rupees for the families of those who lost their lives.
Then there was the reaction from higher up. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar spoke out about it. He called the loss of life "heartbreaking." He insisted on a deep inquiry into everything. He basically said, “Any loss is tragic, but children dying? That’s just heartbreaking.” He felt the Railways needed to do a separate investigation.
