Controversy over Alleged Theft of Donations from Ram Temple in Ayodhya

Satish Mahana, the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker, has really stirred up trouble with his comments about alleged theft of donations from the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. The backlash from the opposition was immediate and sharp.

He brought up the issue when talking about these supposed missing funds. Mahana suggested something like, “Perhaps those whose money was stolen didn’t donate with true faith and devotion. We donated with complete faith, and our money is still in the temple.” It sounded dismissive, didn't it?

That remark really caught people off guard. Opposition voices reacted instantly. Ashutosh Verma, a leader from the Samajwadi Party, called Mahana’s comments “highly absurd.” He pushed back hard. The Speaker shouldn't be making light of things involving devotees’ offerings and public faith.

Then you had Congress spokesperson Anshu Awasthi jumping in too. Awasthi accused the BJP leaders themselves of failing to protect the donations made at the Ram Temple. It felt like a deflection, pulling focus onto who was responsible for safeguarding the money, not just where it went.

Mahana kept going, pushing back on the criticism. He questioned the whole premise, asking something about measuring devotion: “Was there a GPS to measure the devotion with which people donated?” That kind of questioning just throws everything into disarray. It makes you wonder what’s really happening behind closed doors.

This all kicks off from an actual controversy that started in early June. Discrepancies were uncovered regarding how donations were counted at the Ayodhya Temple. Not a clean accounting, at least not officially.

The Uttar Pradesh government stepped in then. They set up a Special Investigation Team, or SIT , to look into these financial messes. It was an official move, trying to sort out what happened.

And what they found? The investigation reportedly suggested that funds had actually been misappropriated. That led to filing an FIR and arresting eight people involved in managing the donation counts at the temple. A whole mess of arrests stemming from a counting error.

The internal fallout was just as messy. The controversy didn't just stick to the political stage, either. It shook up the trust itself. General Secretary Champat Rai stepped down from his position. The temple trust accepted his resignation on July 6th.

Krishna Mohan, a former Indian Forest Service officer, took over. He was the one who actually filed that FIR in the case. A change of guard, forced by the chaos.

And it wasn't just him shaking things up. Trustee Anil Mishra also resigned. Gopal Rao, someone who had been a special invitee to the trust, was removed from his role too. It seems all these related figures are pulling out after the probe started. The whole thing feels like an unraveling story, doesn’t it?
