FIFA World Cup 2026 Referee Controversy: England and Argentina

England and Argentina are set to face off in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final on Wednesday. But there’s one thing everyone knows already whichever team wins the final, the referees won't be from the other country. It just isn't happening.

This whole situation comes down to that long argument over the Falkland Islands. Britain calls it an Overseas Territory, but Argentina claims them as the Islas Malvinas. A really sensitive spot. Tensions boiled over into the 1982 war when Argentina invaded on April 2nd.

That conflict dragged on for seventy-four days before things finally settled down a bit. The cost was heavy though. About six hundred forty-nine Argentine soldiers, two hundred fifty British troops, and three Falkland Islanders were killed during that time. Even after the fighting stopped in June of '82, Argentina still holds onto that claim. It’s just too much baggage to ignore today.

Because of all this political mess, FIFA has steered clear. In recent World Cups, they’ve avoided putting English referees on Argentine matches and Argentinian ones on England fixtures. This rule sticks even to the group stages. No bias allowed.

That's why you don't see Michael Oliver or Anthony Taylor considered for Argentina’s quarter-final against Switzerland. Messi’s side won that game, 3-1, of course. And Facundo Tello? He’s only been assigned games in the opposite half of the bracket. Can't officiate England matches at all.

Referee appointments are handled by FIFA’s department, led by Pierluigi Collina. Performance is supposed to be the main thing. But you can't ignore the geopolitical stuff either. You have to try and avoid any whiff of favoritism.

These restrictions aren't unique though. They apply to other rivalries too. Referees are barred from taking charge when their own countries or clubs with which they have close regional ties are involved. It’s a mess, really.

So for Wednesday’s semi-final? No referee from either England or Argentina will be there. Only the game between Spain and France gets to use those spots. Just another layer of complication hanging over the whole tournament.
