Pakistan's Nationwide Crackdown on Afghan Citizens

Pakistan started a fresh nationwide crackdown on Afghan citizens. It kicked off after the government’s deadline expired on July 11th. Raids, arrests, deportations they are happening across lots of cities now, top security sources are saying that.

The Pakistan Interior Ministry directed authorities everywhere to hunt down and detain Afghan immigrants. Part of this renewed action, apparently.

Raids were carried out in major spots. Karachi, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Lahore, and several others saw these operations. In Karachi alone, police arrested twenty-seven undocumented Afghan nationals over the intervening night of July 11th and 12th.

Around twenty thousand Afghan migrants are facing phased expulsion under this latest sweep. It’s a big number.

Peshawar is preparing for a deportation drive, sources told us. The police there have asked the federal government for help pushing this through soon. Announcements about the crackdown were made via mosque loudspeakers. That just made people hide indoors as arrests started happening. Those families detained will end up at the Nasir Bagh Transit Camp.

Demolitions are also going on. Houses and shops near Hatingri Phatak in Peshawar are being torn down, part of this whole operation.

Then there’s the side about assets. The Interior Ministry told Balochistan authorities to stop Afghan migrants from buying property. That's one thing. But top sources suggested the federal government is pushing for stricter rules on selling assets owned by Afghan refugees in Balochistan too. Urging the state to ban property and vehicle deals involving both registered and unregistered Afghans. It’s all about streamlining the repatriation, they claim.

There’s a real tone behind this. Sources indicated that Pakistan’s civil-military regime decided it needed to show “no mercy” towards Afghans. Field Marshal Asim Munir, the Army Chief, reportedly wants every single Afghan citizen expelled from Pakistan as quickly as possible. That sentiment is running through things.

Meanwhile, the international side is watching. Six million Afghans have already been forced out of Pakistan and Iran since 2023. And now there’s this bigger warning. The United Nations reports suggest that three million more Afghans could face deportation by the end of the year alone. They warn mass repatriations might actually increase Afghanistan’s population by about ten percent. It just deepens the economic crisis for those returning home, you know?
