Iran's Strikes and Retaliation Against US Bases in West Asia

Strikes just kept rocking West Asia. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced Monday that they completely destroyed fuel tanks and Patriot air defense systems at Ali Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait. That was near a key regional ally of the United States.

The IRGC framed these actions as part of the third phase of their “eye-for-an-eye” operation against Washington. They claimed those strikes, carried out by their aerospace forces, were retaliation for US military action against Tehran. And they warned things were still going on, according to Al Jazeera.

They issued a stark warning too. Against further US involvement in the Strait of Hormuz . That waterway is a major maritime chokepoint nearly one-fifth of global energy traffic. It’s become this key sticking point between the US and Iran trying to end things. A real chokehold, you know?

Kuwait itself is a big Gulf ally for the US. They host about 13,000 American personnel there. Makes it a major hub for Central Command. Those bases, Ali Al-Salem and Ahmad al-Jaber they are vital airbases for US regional defense.

Then you have the counter-story coming from Iran itself. In a statement through IRNA, the army said drone attacks were still happening on US bases in the region. They claimed “destructive drone” assaults hit US forces in Kuwait, plus defense and missile systems there.

The army condemned what they called repeated US attacks. On military sites. Civilian infrastructure. Civilians. They called it a "blatant violation" of UN Charter principles. Al Jazeera reported that part.

Earlier today, the IRGC had targeted facilities at the Sheikh Isa airbase in Bahrain. That was their second phase retaliation operation, Al Jazeera said. They aimed for helicopter maintenance spots, hangars holding P-8 aircraft, and even a US drone command-and-control center at that base.

This all followed some US strikes in Iran early Monday. Central Command said the fresh wave was meant to continue degrading the ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial ships freely moving through the Strait of Hormuz. At 5 p.m. ET today, they started launching more strikes against Iran.

Things got really tense after that happened. Tehran targeted a commercial ship going through the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday. The crew had to leave because the vessel was engulfed in flames after the strike hit it.

As West Asia keeps sliding into this mess, hopes for traffic through that waterway just keep fading away. It piles on the economic pressure for countries already struggling with soaring energy prices and fuel costs.
