Iran's Memorial Ceremony and the Absence of Supreme Leader Khamenei

Iran announced something next week. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is holding a memorial ceremony for his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, down in Tehran. But whether he will actually show up? nobody really knows yet.

The notice said it was for the "martyred mujahid Imam." It’s scheduled for July 23th. Five to seven pm. A simple remembrance, maybe.

This announcement comes after Mojtaba Khamenei has been quiet. Out of public view. Since he took over as Supreme Leader following his father’s death.

Last week was a big mourning period for the family. Three of his brothers led the funeral prayers for Ayatollah Ali. It was one of the largest gatherings since the late leader passed away. State television showed Mostafa, Meysam, and Masoud Khamenei standing by the coffins at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla.

The setup for the burial itself felt heavy. The remains of Ayatollah Ali were placed together with his daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, and even his 14-month-old granddaughter. All inside that massive religious complex.

That absence Mojtaba Khamenei’s absence from the ceremony that drew attention. He hasn't been seen publicly since assuming power after his father died. It just sits there. Unseen.

Days later, things shifted again. Mojtaba finally spoke out. His first public remark post-funeral. It wasn't about mourning. It was a promise. A promise of revenge for his father’s death. That killing happened during those joint US-Israeli strikes back in late February.

He said something stark. "Vengeance is the will of our nation and must inevitably be carried out." He added that this didn't depend on him personally, or on other officials at all. Whether they were present or not, it would happen. A statement released just hours after some chatter about Donald Trump warning against any assassination attempts.

And then there was the context bleeding in. Mojtaba had already mentioned that the Islamic Republic prepared a list of people to be targeted. It felt like the background hum of everything.

This latest talk comes right when things between Tehran and Washington are getting seriously hot again. The June 17 ceasefire aGreement just collapsed. Both sides have been exchanging fire recently. Rhetoric is up. Fresh worries about the whole conflict are bubbling up now.

So, this memorial announcement it’s more than just honoring an old leader. It marks something else too. Maybe it's Mojtaba Khamenei’s first public appearance since he took the reins of the country. But the real question remains: will he attend? The authorities haven't confirmed anything about that yet.
