Milei's World Cup Ritual and the Final

He told El Observador radio about this on Thursday. There’s no backing down from that tradition. Watching World Cup matches from the presidential residence is just how he does it. He has done it for the entire run leading up to Sunday’s final. A routine, really.

There’s another thing he keeps doing during these games. Something a bit more personal. Milei wears a thick jacket from the state-owned oil company YPF while watching every match. It’s part of the ritual.

He wore that jacket when Argentina beat Switzerland in the quarter-final. That was a 3-1 win, pushing them closer to the final game.

“Since it was cold,” he explained. “And I don’t turn on the heating, I use a jacket from the oil company. On the day of the match against Switzerland, it kept me really warm.”

Then there’s the kicker. He mentioned what happened when he took it off.

“When I took it off,” he added, pausing there, “we conceded a goal. So I put it back on. And I haven’t taken it off since.”

It sounds simple enough, but that seems to be how things go for him during the tournament.

They’ll meet in New Jersey for the trophy. Football’s biggest prize, right there.

That final is going to draw a lot of eyes. People are expecting some big names. King Felipe VI and US President Donald Trump are both scheduled to be there. It’s going to be a massive event.
