The Record-Breaking Value of Football Memorabilia

A shirt from one of football’s biggest moments just hit the record books. It sold for four point nine million dollars at auction in the United States this Thursday.

It was Pele's jersey. The blue shirt he wore during Brazil’s first FIFA World Cup triumph back in ’58. That piece? It became incredibly valuable. One of the most expensive football memorabilia ever sold, maybe.

The anonymous buyer snagged it at Sotheby’s New York, beating out four other people. Think about that: the match where Brazil absolutely crushed Sweden, five to two, and they lifted their first world title right there. That jersey carries all that history.

Pele was just seventeen when he announced himself globally. Scoring twice in that final including a volley that cemented his status as football’s "King." He finished the tournament with six goals across four appearances. Youngest player to score in a World Cup final. Crazy stuff.

And then you have Maradona. His Argentina shirt from the ’86 quarter-final against England is worth more, $9.3 million. That match? It was pure folklore later on. Both those legendary goals the "Hand of God," that famous "Goal of the Century" they made history there too.

Pele’s run in '58 started something huge. He went on to win three World Cups total. ’58, ’62, and ’70. Unmatched record for a reason.

Meanwhile, things aren't slowing down. Over in the future? The 2026 FIFA World Cup final is coming up. Argentina versus Spain in New Jersey this Sunday. It’s going to be intense. Spain got a solid win over France earlier, two-nil in the semifinal. But Argentina? They clawed back from being one goal down and beat England, two to one. Dramatic stuff always happens.

And FIFA just announced something else on Friday. The winner of that tournament gets custom championship rings. A little more ceremony for the big prize.
