Anurag Kumar Appointed Next Commissioner of Police in Delhi

Anurag Kumar was appointed the next Commissioner of Police in Delhi on Friday. It’s a big leadership shift happening right now.

He replaced Satish Golcha. Golcha is leaving the post soon, due to retirement in April 2027, and he was removed from the role prematurely. That sets the stage for this change.

Kumar actually got the Delhi Police Commissioner job on August 22, 2025. That date feels specific it followed something else entirely. A day after that, the Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, had an incident. She was attacked during a public meeting at her residence. It’s a strange timing for such high-level administrative moves.

Kumar isn't just some bureaucrat. He comes from a different background. He’s a 1994-batch IPS officer, hailing from the AGMUT cadre Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and the Union Territories. Apparently, he was repatriated from his role as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau back to his home cadre right before this move happened.

The Ministry of Home Affairs order laid out the official reason for it. It basically said that with approval, Anurag Kumar is appointed Commissioner of Police , Delhi. Effective immediately, and until further orders. That’s the official line.

What really sticks out is where he came from. He’s known for handling serious security stuff, strategic matters. The move seems to reflect a strong push by the Centre to bolster policing and internal security in the capital. It points toward using someone with deep intelligence experience at the top job.

He has some solid credentials too. A Bachelor of Engineering deGree. And he's picked up awards over the years the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010, and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016. He spent time holding various spots within the Delhi Police itself, serving as Deputy Commissioner of Police in different districts before moving over to the Intelligence Bureau.

He’ll now be overseeing everything. Policing, law and order, crime control, traffic regulation all that stuff in the national capital. Plus, making sure key government places, VIPs, and big public events are secured. It’s a massive responsibility.

Meanwhile, there was another major shuffle happening within the Delhi Police itself. On March 3rd, they moved out 70 officers. Fifty of those were IPS officers, twenty DANIPS personnel too. This wasn't just about the top spot; it affected everything from district policing down to specialized wings and joint commissioners.

Some names shifted around during that time. Sanjay Kumar Jain got appointed Officer on Special Duty to the Commissioner, while also holding extra charge as Joint Commissioner of Police for Tech and PI. Kime Kamjing moved from Traffic to Armed Police joint command. Dheeraj Kumar took over as Joint CP for Crime, heading up the Anti-Narcotics Task Force. Ajit Kumar Singla got posted in the Eastern Range. Sanjay Kumar Tyagi stepped up as Joint CP for Traffic.

It’s all a lot of movement happening behind the scenes. The appointment of an intelligence officer to lead Delhi Police really speaks to where the focus is right now on security and internal control in that city. It feels like a deliberate push toward centralized, high-level oversight.
