Anti-India Mobilization and Border Tensions in Bangladesh

A torchlight procession recently took place in Dhaka, organized by a political group linked to Jamaat-e-Islami and other Islamist organizations. This event immediately raised flags about growing anti-India mobilization happening across Bangladesh, and what that might mean for India-Bangladesh relations overall. Top Indian intelligence sources have been talking about this stuff.

Members of the Bangladesh Azad Party (BAP) and some other Islamist groups actually held the march on June 19th in Dhaka’s Gulshan area. They were moving right toward the Indian High Commission.

The whole reason for the protest, they claimed, was to push back against what they saw as India's attempts to move undocumented migrants and Bangladeshi nationals across the border.

Bangladeshi police stopped the demonstrators at the Gulshan-1 circle before they could actually get to the Indian diplomatic mission. Then, protesters just sat down there. A sit-in.

During that demonstration, things got more pointed. Participants burned an effigy of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. It was a clear signal against India’s border policies and some of his recent comments about deporting infiltrators.

Intelligence Sources Flag Jamaat Strategy

The way this is being framed suggests something calculated. Indian intelligence sources described the formation of the Bangladesh Azad Party as a deliberate move by Jamaat-e-Islami. It’s meant to expand their political reach and stir up public feeling against India.

They are trying to use old border disputes, those allegations about "push-ins," and actions by the Border Security Force to generate nationalist sentiment against India.

This strategy aims to consolidate support for the Islamist organization in areas along the India-Bangladesh border. That’s where Jamaat-e-Islami has historically done well in elections.

The mobilization also seems like a test. They're trying to see how the current Bangladeshi government will react and create some political pressure before they make bigger moves down the line.

Attempt To Broaden Islamist Appeal

The Bangladesh Azad Party is being projected as this new platform, bringing in figures connected to Jamaat-e-Islami, plus people tied to names like Barrister Shariar Alam and some retired military personnel. That’s what the intelligence inputs suggest.

Indian agencies think forming such a group is about trying to widen the appeal of Islamist politics beyond just Jamaat’s usual base. It's an attempt at broadening that reach.

This development fits into Jamaat’s resurgence strategy, especially after all the political shifts in Bangladesh back in 2024. The sources warned that these scattered street demonstrations could slowly morph into a sustained campaign focused entirely on anti-India issues.

Security Concerns For Indian Mission

The march itself brought serious security worries for the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, especially because the demonstrators actually tried to move right toward the diplomatic mission.

There have been similar attempts by protest groups trying to approach that High Commission before. New Delhi has reacted then, with formal protests and summoning Bangladeshi representatives.

But the authorities usually step in. They generally intervened to stop these demonstrations from reaching diplomatic areas or turning into a full-blown confrontation.

Still, there’s the risk hanging over everything. Sources cautioned that if this kind of anti-India demonstration keeps happening repeatedly, it could seriously strain the relationship between New Delhi and Dhaka.

These two countries are already juggling so many sensitive things migration, border security, trade, water sharing, how minorities are treated. This latest protest just reflects that wider feeling, that anti-India sentiment being pushed by some political outfits and Islamist groups in Bangladesh amidst all the ongoing diplomatic friction over borders and management.
