The Evolution of Bollywood Romance: From Cocktail to Cocktail 2

The buzz around Cocktail 2 , with Shahid Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Kriti Sanon stepping in it just pulls you back to the original movie. You look back at what Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Diana Penty managed to create in the first one. It’s that magic.

People get nostalgic fast. Especially when relationships are involved. Cocktail , back in 2012, it was a fresh take on modern messiness. Relationships, you know? They often just confuse everything. But here’s something people don't talk about much: Saif Ali Khan wasn’t even the first guy they looked at for Gautam’s role.

He actually opened up about that. In a chat with Variety India, he said there was some trouble finding a lead hero. Deepika and Diana were locked in. But they couldn't nail down the right face for the part. “They had Deepika and Diana,” Saif mentioned. “But they couldn’t get a hero to play it. Probably because Veronica’s part is so delicious.” That line about Veronica really sticks with you.

Then he dug into the history of who was considered. He remembered some names floated around. Imran Khan, Ranbir Kapoor. And then there were others. Saif admitted that he just said, ‘Okay, chal, I’ll do it.’ He laughed about it later. Said he had a good time doing it. Loved Homi Adajania too. Just a good memory of the process.

Ranbir Kapoor wasn't far behind in his opinion. He actually suggested Deepika shouldn’t have done the film at all. But she went with it. She gave one of those performances that just sticks, you know? One of her most memorable ones in Hindi cinema. And fast forward. When the movie came out, people started calling her ‘Veronica.’ Not Deepika anymore.

Ranbir admitted he was wrong about his judgment too. It’s funny how things shift.

Now we’re here. Years later. Shahid, Rashmika, Kriti are driving this franchise forward. But honestly? Cocktail 2 didn't quite build on that legacy. News18 gave it two and a half stars. That review hit you right in the gut. It said what?

“Ultimately, what we’re left with is a one-tone, predictable and quintessential Bollywood love triangle.” Two women squabbling over a man who just doesn't have the comic timing or the pull of Gautam that Saif Ali Khan managed. To put it plainly. It feels like old wine in a not-so-new bottle. We’ve tasted this too many times already.

The review kept going. Cocktail 2 tries to bottle up modern love upheavals, but it's terrified of spilling anything. All the talk about complicated relationships and emotional infidelity? It stays too safe. The designer clothes, the postcard locations they look great on screen. But that intoxication fades fast. Once the high wears off, what you get is a rom-com with little romance and even less comedy. That’s the reality of it all.</p
