Belgium is really in a tight spot right now. They have almost zero room for error facing Iran in that Group G clash at the World Cup 2026 on Sunday. Both teams just know a positive result there could actually decide everything about making it to the knockout rounds.
The Red Devils are already under massive pressure. That disappointing 1-1 draw against Egypt earlier felt like a huge stumble. They needed an own goal in the second half just to grab a single point back in Seattle. It kept them afloat, sure, but honestly, it didn't ease anyone’s concerns about how they’re actually playing.
If Belgium can pull off a win against Iran, that would put them in a seriously commanding position going into their final group game. Four points there? That opens up the door to the Round of 32. It changes the whole equation for them.
Iran, meanwhile, have been building some momentum too. They got a tough 2-2 draw against New Zealand in their opening match. They know that if they manage an upset against Belgium, it puts themselves right on the edge of qualification territory. That’s huge leverage.
Their campaign has also played out against all this political noise about the US involvement. It just adds another layer to whatever is happening on the pitch. But ignoring that for a second Amir Ghalenoei's team has stayed focused and competitive. They keep it locked in, you know?
Sunday’s match itself is historic too. It’s going to be the first time Belgium and Iran have ever played each other at this level. A real first meeting.
You can see where the creative spark is coming from, obviously. Kevin De Bruyne just keeps shining. That's their main weapon. And for Iran, that’s probably their biggest headache: trying to stop the influence of that Manchester City star. It’s a huge tactical battle waiting to happen.
Saeid Ezatolahi and the midfield unit are going to have to do heavy lifting. They need to shut down all those spaces De Bruyne loves to run through, between the lines. If Belgium gets time on the ball if that captain can just hold it he’s got the vision to unlock anything and set up Romelu Lukaku or their wide players for a chance.
Finding that balance is going to be everything in this game. Pressing De Bruyne while still keeping shape? That defines the whole outcome, I think. It's delicate work.
On the other side of the pitch, Iran’s hopes really seem to hinge on Mehdi Taremi. He’s their most dangerous attacking threat right now. He needs to test that Belgian defense that has shown some real cracks. With Brandon Mechele and Nathan Ngoy expected to stay in central defence, Taremi's ability to move and score quickly could cause serious chaos if Iran manages those quick counterattacks.
Belgium certainly has depth and quality overall. But the performance against Egypt? That showed they aren't invincible. They’re not unbeatable.
Iran probably won't try to be flashy. Expect them to defend deep, stay organized, and just wait for that chance to push forward through Taremi. It might be a cagey game for long stretches. But eventually, Belgium's talent should force the issue.
Prediction: Belgium 2-1 Iran .
