Ammonia Gas Leak at Seafood Processing Unit in Tamil Nadu

Two women died. And over sixty workers ended up hospitalized after an ammonia gas leak hit a seafood processing unit in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur district on Sunday. It was just… sudden.

The whole thing happened at St Peter’s Paul Seafoods Exports facility, way near Kannigaipair, by Periyapalayam. Following the disaster at that shrimp plant, the NDRF 4th Battalion headquarters in Arakkonam got the alert right away. Emergency response kicked in fast.

Police said initially there were seven deaths. But things shifted later. The CMO and Health Minister KG Arunraj put the number down to two. One person was brought dead to a private hospital. The other one… they just passed away without responding to treatment there, he told reporters. That kind of weight you can’t ignore.

Sixty-four workers were on duty when this happened. Sixty women and four men got caught in the sudden gas leak. It was a terrible scene unfolding among them.

The medical fallout was significant too. The Minister pointed out where people ended up. Twenty-eight patients at Vels Medical College. Eighteen at Venkateshwara Hospital. Ten at Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital, MMC. And seven at Government Stanley Hospital. A lot of stress for those facilities.

Meanwhile, the political side reacted. Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay stepped in. He announced an ex gratia of two lakh rupees for the families who lost their lives in that leak. He also made sure injured workers got whatever medical treatment they needed. But he didn't stop there. He ordered inspections across the state. Hazardous industries, check them. Stop this from happening again.

They set up a three-member panel to look into it. Director of Industrial Safety and Health was on it. Pollution Control Board member too. And the Additional Director of Public Health. They have to deliver an interim report in twenty-four hours. Final report in three days. That’s the mandate. Real investigation time.

The CM also pushed for action on the ground. He told the IT Minister and local monitoring officials to head straight to the affected area. Coordinate relief with the district administration. Make sure everyone got what they needed. Comprehensive care, that was the goal.

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arleker also weighed in. He took to X to share his sadness. “I am deeply saddened by the tragic ammonia gas leak incident at a shrimp processing factory in Kannigaipair Village,” he tweeted. “It resulted in the loss of precious lives and injuries to several workers.” A simple statement, but heavy with meaning.

The whole situation feels messy. Accidents like this just keep happening. The response is official, but there’s always that gap between what happens on the ground and what gets reported neatly. It’s just a tragedy unfolding in Thiruvallur right now.
