Ambassador Greer's Visit to New Delhi for US-India Trade Negotiations

Ambassador Jamieson Greer is heading to New Delhi this week. He’s going for talks with Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and some other senior Indian officials. The whole thing is about pushing forward negotiations for that proposed India–US Bilateral Trade AGreement, and reviewing what they’ve already managed under the interim arrangement.

This isn't just a routine trip. It follows up on commitments made back when Prime Minister Modi and President Trump met way back in February 2025. That joint statement is the backdrop here.

The official release said it all. Greer is there to discuss that historic Joint Statement, plus the Interim AGreement, as part of the bigger picture of the US-India Trade AGreement talks. It sounds important.

What they’re really aiming for seems pretty straightforward: expanding trade ties. And making sure Washington gets what they call a “fair, balanced and reciprocal" trading relationship. That phrase always carries weight in these discussions.

Meanwhile, there are other moves happening too. After New Delhi, Greer is scheduled to head to Tashkent, Uzbekistan. There he’ll meet President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, plus Saida Mirziyoyeva and Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjaev. Trade matters there too. It’s a lot of movement across the board.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor made sure people knew about it. He sounded keen for Greer to arrive in New Delhi. There are multiple rounds of talks already lined up with Goyal, trying to push that US-India trade deal forward sooner rather than later. Both sides seem really focused on nailing down some kind of interim deal quickly.

“Looking forward to welcoming Ambassador Greer @USTradeRep to New Delhi! Multiple sessions scheduled with Minister @PiyushGoyal to advance the U.S.-India trade deal!,” he posted on X. A simple message, but it shows the push.

This visit hits a crucial spot in the negotiations. It’s not just talking about tariffs or market access anymore. They’re trying to sort out things that have been hanging around for ages digital trade, agriculture, all those longstanding issues.

India and the US are massive trading partners. We're talking nearly $190 billion crossing borders in recent years. Officials on both sides keep hammering home the idea that this number needs to jump up significantly over the next few years.

So Greer’s time in New Delhi is being watched closely. It tells us something about where things stand. Are they actually moving toward an interim pact? Or are we still just spinning wheels toward a full trade aGreement? That's what everyone’s waiting to see.
