Review of Main Vaapas Aaunga: Partition, Love, and Box Office Strategy

Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapas Aaunga , it opened slowly at all. But he still thinks there’s room for it to grow through word-of-mouth. It’s a period romance drama, set right against that heavy backdrop of the 1947 Partition, and it hit theaters on June 12th. Sharvari, Vedang Raina, Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah they are all involved in this story.

Even with some positive audience reactions coming back, it didn't explode at the box office right away. Imtiaz himself admitted he wasn’t banking on it being a massive star vehicle from day one. He talked about how crucial Diljit Dosanjh’s presence was. It just gave the film something extra to grab attention for.

He mentioned putting Diljit on the poster, making it more appealing. The core of the love story is between Vedang Raina and Sharvari, obviously. But Imtiaz felt that having Diljit there helped pull people in. Everyone knows him, right? That familiarity creates interest. He was sure that presence mattered for the poster appeal.

Diljit himself has built up such a huge global following across music and films. Bringing him into this Imtiaz Ali world, especially after Amar Singh Chamkila, added another layer of curiosity. People were wondering what he’d bring to this story.

When it came to why things moved slowly, Imtiaz said he expected modest numbers initially. It wasn't meant to be some instant blockbuster thing. The real journey depends on people talking about it. If it’s good, they tell others. That’s the only way it actually progresses. He really hopes it keeps getting stronger.

He seemed happy seeing younger viewers engaging with it too. There’s always that gap, you know? Between what critics think and what the money shows. He felt like the industry needs to start closing that space.

For something dealing with love, loss, and longing especially against Partition sustained conversation feels vital for a film like this. That kind of audience connection matters more than just opening weekend numbers.

Day 7 brought some movement though. It picked up a bit. They hit Rs 2.20 crore across those screens. That’s a jump from Day 6, which was around Rs 1.75 crore nett. Some sign of improvement there. But that’s just the start. We still need to see if that positive talk translates into weekend action.

Main Vaapas Aaunga , directed by Imtiaz Ali, is fundamentally about those heavy themes the love, the memory, the separation all framed by 1947. Sharvari and Vedang Raina anchor the romance. Diljit Dosanjh and Naseeruddin Shah are there too, playing key parts in this emotional sweep. It got attention for that backdrop, for Imtiaz’s usual way of exploring longing.

Right now, it keeps running. Imtiaz is just waiting on those viewer conversations to keep pushing the theatrical run forward. That's what he’s counting on.
