India-Slovakia Partnership: Geopolitics, Technology, and Energy

Narendra Modi landing in Bratislava. It’s not something that happens every week. But it did happen. The first time an Indian Prime Minister landed there, and it wasn't just a ceremony. There were all those expected optics thrown in. High-level chats with Robert Fico and Peter Pellegrini, upgrading the ties into some kind of Comprehensive Partnership. Defence cooperation signals. Business outreach. Even getting Slovakia its top civilian honour, the Order of the White Double Cross (First Class).
But what does all that actually mean?
Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár, talking to CNN-News18, said it was groundwork. Deeper cooperation needed in defence, technology, advanced manufacturing, and energy. He pushed back on ideas about NATO membership stopping defence ties with India. Said India and Bratislava could actually help diplomacy on Ukraine.
He brought up the Middle East too. Welcomed that US-Iran memo. But stressed keeping global energy supplies safe. Freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz that still matters, right?
Why did it take so long for an Indian PM to visit Slovakia? Our formal ties started in '93. But there’s been this steady thing building up over the years. Political dialogue. Economic cooperation. People links growing slowly but surely. Modi’s trip is just the peak of that whole engagement, really. It follows a few other moves Murmu’s visit earlier in 2025, Pellegrini coming to India. It feels like a necessary step now. A springboard for more stuff.
Which area should see the biggest jump? Technology? Energy? Manufacturing? You can't pick just one easily. They all bleed into each other. But I think technology and advanced manufacturing is where the real pull is right now. Slovakia’s getting stronger as an industrial base in Europe. Bringing in India’s digital innovation, software skills that fits naturally into their factory lines.
And don’t forget energy. Green hydrogen. Battery storage. That stuff is going to be massive for everyone moving toward Greener economies. So it's not one thing leading the charge. It’s all connected pillars shaping this partnership.
Then there’s defence. Was there real progress there? Or does NATO alignment stop things down? There’s momentum, though. The Letter of Intent between the ministries is important. It sets a roadmap for R&D and procurement. That could open doors long-term toward military cooperation aGreements. And remember, Slovakia already has history with Indian defence industries. They’ve been providing tech solutions for years. Those old connections can unlock new space now.
NATO? No, I don't see it as a wall. Security today isn't just about borders anymore. Cyber, space, critical infrastructure India and NATO countries overlap on these things. The focus should be building practical links wherever sense exists. Forward-looking partnership.
Differences came up in the talks, naturally. Respect is the starting point for us. That lets you talk honestly even when perspectives clash because of geography or strategy. But there are differences. We have to discuss them constructively. There’s a shared ground on diplomacy. On international law. The UN Charter. That’s the bedrock for peace.
The India-EU FTA is done, but it isn't active yet. Does that mean smaller economies like Slovakia get left behind? Absolutely not. They should be gaining from this deal. We might be small in size. But we are an open, export-driven industrial economy. That gives us a solid position when partnering with India’s growing global footprint.
The Comprehensive Partnership elevation reflects ambition. Once the FTA kicks in, markets should open up. Especially automotive. Slovakia still makes a lot of cars per person globally. That access is key.
Ukraine. Did that weigh heavily? It was a concern for everyone. Our talks focused on strengthening this new partnership trade, tech, defense. But talking about Ukraine and global security? Of course we did. We aGree: military force won't solve anything. Diplomacy must lead toward a just peace, following the rules of international law. Europe needs to be more active in that talk too.
Slovakia can’t decide the war's outcome. India has its weight globally. Slovakia has that European view. Together, you keep the dialogue alive.
And energy. The EU is making huge shifts away from Russian gas. It’s costly. But they are moving cutting Russia’s share down. Banning coal. Setting timelines for phasing out gas imports. That transition is brutal. Still, energy security is a sovereign priority everywhere. India has its own development needs and realities. Those have to be respected too.
So it's not just one side asking too much of the other. It’s about partnership on things like Green hydrogen or better supply chains. There is real scope for both sides to work together, supporting energy security while moving forward.
When Trump was threatening tariffs? That global uncertainty came up in discussions. For an economy built on exports, these shifts are watched closely. It pushes you to diversify your bets. Build stronger ties with reliable partners. And India is clearly one of those places. Trade numbers already hit €1.5 billion recently. But there’s more potential waiting, especially in tech and supply chains. That builds a footing that can handle the unpredictability out there.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a choke point for energy. Even with the US-Iran memo, Europe still feels exposed to price shocks and shipping costs. They are focused on preparedness now. Coordinating across the EU. Finding new routes. Keeping those strategic reserves full. Freedom of navigation? That stays a major priority. Stability in the global energy system that’s everything.
