Imtiaz Ali's Film *Main Vaapas Aaunga* and Box Office Reality

Imtiaz Ali’s film, Main Vaapas Aaunga , it’s getting all the love right now. People are really liking it since it came out. Starring Vedang Raina, Sharvari, Naseeruddin Shah, and Diljit Dosanjh. It’s got strong performances, a compelling story. But you see this, the appreciation doesn't quite match what happened at the box office.

Imtiaz himself touched on it. He said something about why that is. Apparently, it wasn't driven by just "stars." That’s where the issue started, he implied.

He quoted Hindustan Times saying, “We are not a star-driven film, so this film was supposed to be like this. It couldn’t have opened big.” He felt if it was good, people would actually go and tell others to watch it. That's the only way something like this really moves forward. Hopefully, it keeps growing. Strengthening itself.

He seemed happy about the younger crowd connecting with it though. There’s usually a lag between what critics love and what the money shows you. He felt they were finally closing that gap. Ticket sales are showing an uptrend now. Figures are improving if you look closely at the sales numbers, he mentioned.

When asked why he brought in newcomers like Vedang and Sharvari? The director got philosophical there. He talked about confidence. He isn't from the industry itself, not exactly. He’s more about the art of filmmaking. He understands cinema, performance, sure, but also casting. That power you get when all those things line up. A certain force is created.

He admitted he didn't doubt those actors could carry the story well. But there was another angle. The poster. Diljit Dosanjh. Everybody knows him. People are interested in seeing what he does. There’s that appeal just because of who is on the poster, he said. That gives it a certain pull.

Then he shifted to something deeper. Reflecting on this younger generation connecting with the movie... Imtiaz felt they needed more love. He said the younger ones are the most lost, yet they’re always seeking it out. If they could get that kind of relationship feeling we had before? They would probably just take that path.

It’s enchanting for them to imagine that commitment. They are a sensitive generation. But there’s this layer of misunderstanding, isn't there? They've been misrepresented. Like it’s their fault they seem flaky. Their lives aren't the same as before, but they need more substance. That’s what he concluded. A lot of feeling packed into those last lines.
