Fallout of Allegations: Institutional Response and Legal Action in Medical Colleges

The whole situation is kind of messy. You have this high-level order coming down from Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, triggered by some really serious stuff allegations about religious conversion involving a doctor at KGMU, and someone’s daughter disappearing, linked to an SGPGI employee.

And now the fallout hits the medical colleges across the state. The governor essentially ordered them all to set up these Religious Conversion Prevention Cells. They call them Dharmantaran Roktham Cells . It sounds official, but it's tied directly to these very specific, troubling incidents that sparked the reaction.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University was right there in the middle of this. They got instructions. The special officer on duty, Dr Sudhir M Bobde, communicated the direction. Then the registrar, following orders from the vice-chancellor Amit Devgan, pushed it down to all the affiliated colleges. It’s a chain reaction, really.

Purpose of the Prevention Cells

What are these cells supposed to do? Mostly awareness, they say. Getting students, doctors, staff making sure they know the rules, their rights, what they’re responsible for. They also need to keep an eye out for anything suspicious happening around campus. Colleges were told to organize drives too. Trying to get everyone familiar with the relevant rules and responsibilities.

KGMU spokesperson, Prof KK Singh, said their medical university already had some sort of Anti-Conversion Cell running. So they are complying with the governor’s move. It seems like a response to something that was already simmering, an acknowledgment that safety mechanisms needed tightening in these institutions following those alleged incidents happening back in Lucknow.

Separate Thread of Police Action

But it wasn't just about campus rules. There’s this separate thread of police action going on too. Meanwhile, reports are surfacing about a search being launched. Police are looking for a 21-year-old woman whose father claimed she was forcibly taken away by someone he knew, something related to conversion.

That leads you to the legal side, the FIR registered at the PGI police station on May 22nd. It falls under Section 87 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita kidnapping, or forcing a marriage through abduction. The father’s complaint alleged that his daughter left for the market in Telibagh after getting a job call, but she never came back. He claimed a man forcibly took her away.

So you have the institutional mandate the colleges scrambling to set up these cells based on serious allegations and then you have this very real case unfolding with the police searching for that missing young woman. It’s all happening at once, this pressure cooker of reactions and investigations surrounding safety within the medical world and outside it.
