West Bengal TMC Internal Split and Political Turmoil

West Bengal TMC. It’s just chaos right now. There’s this massive internal split happening inside the Trinamool Congress, and it’s spilling out in resignations and these statements from rebel leaders. Everyone is speculating about some kind of merger.
Ritabrata Banerjee, one of those rebels, he was pretty firm on Wednesday. He absolutely denied any talk of merging his faction with the Congress. He said this whole mess is strictly internal to the party. No external stuff.
But things are moving fast. You see senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury? He just dismissed all the merger chatter too. Said he wasn't even aware of those discussions happening.
Meanwhile, Sonia Gandhi stepped in. She called on Mamata Banerjee to actually join forces with the Congress. Gotta keep pushing for unity against the BJP. That appeal came right after some INDIA bloc leaders met up in Delhi. They stressed coordination was necessary.
Then there’s Abhishek Banerjee. He met Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi yesterday. Just a meeting, but it carries weight now. It happens when things are strained inside the TMC. People are watching how that plays out with all the internal friction.
Sources within the TMC quickly shut down any rumors about merging with Congress. They basically said there is no such plan on the table. One senior leader was pretty blunt. Said the talk is completely baseless. “We have no such information,” he told PTI. Baseless, they called it.
And over in the Congress camp, Jairam Ramesh weighed in too. He dismissed those media reports about that meeting between Sonia Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee as totally inaccurate. He insisted it was just a cordial chat. Personal stuff. Reflecting how long they’ve known each other.
Ramesh posted something on X about it. Said some news reporting what happened there is completely wrong. The meeting was fine. Lots of personal talks, you know? Given the history between them.
Then there’s Sushmita Dev. She resigned. Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan accepted it. Effective June 10th. Another big exit point amid all this internal turmoil in the TMC.
After leaving, she said she wants to focus on Assam now. Her recent meeting with Himanta Biswa Sarma in New Delhi is fueling speculation. People are wondering about a possible shift toward the BJP there. But Dev herself insisted it was personal choices. She rejected any idea that she was just opportunist.
Not just her. A few days ago, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray stepped down from the Rajya Sabha too. He gave up his primary party membership. He spoke out against how the party performed in the West Bengal Assembly elections. He called it a result of fifteen years of what he felt was anarchical rule under Mamata Banerjee.
The real rattle is happening with the MLAs themselves now. Days after that, rebel TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said something big. A group of twenty MPs has formally asked for separate seating arrangements in the Lok Sabha. It signals a serious organizational divide within the party ranks.
And look at the Assembly itself. The TMC leadership got hit hard there too. Fifty-eight MLAs just defied the high command. They rejected Sovandeb Chattopadhyay being named Leader of the Opposition. Instead, they chose expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee for that spot. It’s messy. A real split showing right there in the state politics.
