Jammu and Kashmir Education Order and Review of School Materials

The Jammu and Kashmir government just dropped a new order. It's demanding that all schools and coaching centres in the Valley look through the books and educational materials they have right now. They want a review.

The official line is simple: students shouldn’t be exposed to anything deemed ‘controversial’ or anti-national stuff. That’s what the Directorate of School Education has issued this new directive.

This whole thing kicked off because of a book that got distributed through the Samagra Shiksha programme in government schools. People are saying it had content that just didn't sit right with everyone, echoing separatist narratives and contradicting India’s position on the Union Territory status. Think about terms like “Indian Occupied Kashmir” or "Indian Held Kashmir" instead of using the official terminology for Jammu and Kashmir. Top intelligence sources pointed this out to CNN-News18.

It felt necessary, they said. A move to protect national security and look out for the students. But naturally, it’s stirred up a lot of noise politically. Opposition parties are already jumping in. They’re criticizing the directive hard, arguing that it just restricts how people discuss history and ideas freely.

So what exactly is this new order asking for?

Well, essentially, every educational institution government schools, private ones they recognize, even those coaching centres they all have to inspect everything. Libraries, classrooms, whatever materials are lying around need a deep look. School heads are now required to sign off on something. They have to certify that nothing rule-breaking is hiding in their premises.

The warning attached to it is sharp. Anything found that hurts religious feelings, breaks existing laws, or promotes separatism? It has to be pulled out immediately. There’s a real threat if you ignore this. Failure to comply or just messing around with it could lead to serious disciplinary action for the officials and the school management involved.

This directive doesn't come out of nowhere either. It follows previous actions. Remember nearly a year ago? The Home Department had already banned the sale and publication of 25 specific books related to Kashmir things by authors like Arundhati Roy and A.G. Noorani. The government had claimed those publications were fueling separatist ideology back then.

And now, this is the latest push. It’s about control over what students are learning. Officially, the order covers roughly 10,787 government schools plus about 2,386 recognized private ones across the whole Kashmir Division. A lot of institutions are involved here. The ripple effect feels huge.
