Southwest Monsoon Update and Rainfall Data

Weeks of eluding the country, and now the southwest monsoon is finally pushing back. Heavy rainfall has started rolling in across the past week. It’s brought some relief, cutting that massive national deficit down to fifteen percent overall.

But the picture is complicated. India just had its fifth driest June since 1901. That staggering rain shortfall was nearly forty percent. And July?

The capital too felt it. Thursday brought major downpours. Safdarjung saw seventy-three millimeters. Lodhi Road got eighty. Nearly one hundred three at Mayur Vihar in the last twenty-four hours alone. Noida followed suit with sixty-two. Just constant rain hitting the cities.

The IMD data is still messy, though. Out of thirty-six sub-divisions, eleven are still struggling for rain.

But things are easing elsewhere. Normal rains are hitting most of the other areas now. Excess moisture is where it’s been heavy: West Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry and Karaikal, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, Goa. It hasn't covered everything yet, mind you. It usually hits by July eighth.

Now for the forecast moving forward. More rain is definitely coming. And Central India Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh expect more heavy stuff up to the fourteenth. The momentum is definitely shifting.
