Modi’s Trip to Indonesia and the Indo-Pacific Strategy

Modi’s trip to Indonesia is happening now. Tuesday, July 7th, 2026. It’s the first leg of that big tour India, Australia, New Zealand.

It’s all about pushing the Act East stuff. That MAHASAGAR Vision , and trying to stick to the whole free Indo-Pacific thing. A lot is being talked about behind closed doors.

He'll be in Indonesia from the 6th to the 8th. Talking with President Prabowo Subianto. Trying to deepen those bilateral ties. This isn’t the first time he’s gone there, though. It’s his fourth visit.

The big sticking point seems to be defense. Specifically that BrahMos missile deal . Things are supposed to be moving forward. The Ambassador, Sandeep Chakravorty, said they’ve gotten somewhere on that acquisition. He was hopeful the trip would bring some good news. Just a little bit of it.

But you have to look at the bigger picture. Why this matters?

It’s kind of strange how much trade is lagging here. Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand they don't really add up much in terms of India’s total trade or foreign investment compared to what the aGreements suggest they should have. It feels thin.

And the numbers aren't great either. Trade with these three countries dropped in FY26. Exports down. Imports down. And look at New Zealand specifically. They ended up with a deficit, almost $23 million in FY26. Remember when it was surplus back in '21? Things shifted fast.

After Indonesia, the schedule flips over to Australia. He’s meeting Anthony Albanese there. The focus will be expanding that India-Australia partnership. Strategic talks again.

It just keeps moving. A lot of movement happening across the Pacific right now.
