FIFA Controversy and the Folarin Balogun Suspension

Look, if you think sport and politics don't bleed into each other, then this story about FIFA is for you. It’s a mess.

FIFA just caused some real friction at the 2026 World Cup setup by messing with Folarin Balogun’s automatic one-match ban. They suspended it, clearing the way for that US striker to face Belgium in the Round of 16. That move got praise from Donald Trump and pure rage from the Belgians.

Balogun, who was leading the charge for the USA with three goals at the tournament, got a straight red card during the game against Bosnia and Herzegovina. It happened because he caught defender Tarik Muharemovic high on the ankle with his studs. A classic mistake, maybe? But it came after VAR reviewed it. There were huge claims from players, from Mauricio Pochettino no intent to injure at all.

The rules are kind of simple under IFAB’s Laws: serious foul play is judged by danger, not intention. And a straight red card means an automatic one-match ban. Usually final.

Then came the twist. FIFA announced they suspended Balogun's suspension for a probationary year. They made him available for Monday against Belgium. No real explanation followed that call. Just silence.

The reaction was immediate and messy.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio actually argued that the United States had been completely "screwed" by that red card. Seriously.

But Trump, who seems to have a really close line with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, jumped on it. He celebrated the reversal right there on Truth Social. “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!” That’s how he put it. The White House echoed that sentiment online too.

They even tried to push back, contacting Infantino asking for a review of Balogun’s suspension. But FIFA just shut that down. No comment on the request.

Belgium, though. They were absolutely stunned. It was disbelief. The Royal Belgian Football Association called it astonishing. They felt this decision totally ignored what FIFA itself had set up for the World Cup. They are now looking at “all potential options” to protect the competition, which sounds like a lot of scrambling.

Coach Rudi Garcia also threw shade about the timing. He quipped something about the calendar how July 5th suddenly became April Fool’s Day. It just highlights how much this whole thing felt out of sync.

Balogun had already accepted the initial red card penalty, but now FIFA stepped in with this huge intervention. It means the USA gets their top scorer back in the game while they’re chasing those quarter-finals spots. It changes everything for that match.
