Stock Market Update: Domestic Gains and Global Sentiment

Stock market today started off better domestically. Equities opened higher Friday, just continuing the gains from the previous session. That move was mostly fueled by some solid buying in information technology stocks, plus things settled in Asia and general easing of volatility .

The numbers themselves were moving.

It wasn't just the big tech driving it, though. HCLTech was surging, over five percent.

Broader markets felt that positive shift.

Sectorally, the IT space was clearly the star performer; the Nifty IT index jumped nearly two percent. Gains spread across metal, financial services, auto, private banks, realty, and FMCG too. And something else notable: India VIX, that market fear gauge? It dropped over seven percent. Volatility seemed to ease up a bit.

Meanwhile, things weren't just happening here. Asian equities also traded higher. That was after the US jobs data came out. We saw some relief there; weaker-than-expected numbers made investors less worried about an immediate interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve.

US equity futures also moved higher too.

Fresh PMI data released on Friday showed business activity holding steady across the region. Japan’s services sector actually returned to expansion in June. China’s services kept growing, and overseas demand was up at the fastest rate we’ve seen in two months. It suggests resilience somewhere outside the immediate market noise.

Investor sentiment definitely shifted after that US job growth slowed down sharply in June. Payroll gains for the last couple of months were revised lower. That just signaled a cooling labour market. And that, crucially, eased concerns about the Fed tightening policy immediately. Risk assets globally got a lift from that.

The rupee also reacted. It snapped its four-session losing streak.
