5.5 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Near Jurm in Afghanistan

A 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit near Jurm in northeastern Afghanistan this Wednesday. That’s what the United States Geological Survey reported.
It struck at a depth of 216.7 kilometres, about 134 miles down. No immediate reports came through about any casualties or damage right after it happened.
Jurm itself is tucked away in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province. It’s a spot deep in the mountains. That area? Seismically active . Earthquakes are just part of the deal there, because the Indian and Eurasian plates are grinding together.
It’s not an isolated event. This quake comes after other devastating tremors hit the country. Back in September 2025, there was a massive magnitude 6.0 earthquake across Afghanistan’s east. That one took a terrible toll over 800 dead right off the bat.
The situation is always precarious here. When rescue teams finally managed to reach those remote communities, the death count climbed even higher. Over 2,200 people were dead then. And thousands more injured, reported by Taliban officials and Reuters.
You see this pattern repeating. Back in October 2023, a series of powerful tremors ripped through western Afghanistan, near Herat. That disaster killed over two thousand people and wounded thousands. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters the country has seen in decades.
Afghanistan is just built on instability. It sits right in that volatile Hindu Kush range. Those mountains shake constantly. And trying to do rescue work? It’s complicated, messy. The terrain itself makes things impossibly difficult. Scattered settlements, limited infrastructure it all adds to the headache when disaster strikes.
