Political Posters and Defamation Case Involving Rahul Gandhi

Posters started showing up across parts of Central Delhi on Thursday. They were aimed at Rahul Gandhi and the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition .

BJP leader Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga put them up. It was a political jab, really. He used it to attack Gandhi following some recent comments he made before the Madhya Pradesh High Court in that defamation case involving Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s son.

The posters themselves were pretty blunt. They labeled him ‘Maafiveer’. And they had slogans like “I am Orry” and “I am Sorry.” It felt pointed, you know? Like mockery over his legal response.

This whole campaign kicked off after Gandhi filed something. An application before the High Court where he expressed regret. He claimed the statement wasn't actually about Kartikeya Singh.

But that’s where things got messy. The posters coincided with this political attack by the BJP over that court filing.

National spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla jumped in fast. He made some serious allegations against Gandhi. Said he was a serial liar. That he thought LoP meant ‘leader of propaganda’, not something else entirely. Making claims and then running away after facing legal trouble that’s his habit, Poonawalla said in a video statement.

He went straight to the defamation case. Poonawalla claimed Gandhi admitted making wrong allegations against Kartikeya Singh. He pointed out that Gandhi leveled those accusations about linking him to the Panama Papers.

Poonawalla suggested this wasn't new. He implied Gandhi had followed this pattern before, in other instances too.

The actual background of the case is tangled. The defamation complaint came from Kartikeya Singh himself. Singh alleged something happened during an election rally back in Jhabua in 2018. Rahul Gandhi mentioned his name then, linking it to the Panama Papers leak. That caused reputation damage for him.

After the trial court called Gandhi up, he went to the High Court. He asked for the summons to be quashed. And for the whole defamation process to stop.

In that application, through his lawyer, Gandhi basically said regretful things. Again, he stressed that the statement wasn't connected to Kartikeya Singh.

The High Court is supposed to hear this petition on Thursday. Things are moving around quickly.
