Netherlands versus Morocco. World Cup 2026. Round of 32. It was one of those huge upsets in Monterrey.
Morocco took it. They beat the Netherlands three goals, but only after penalties kicked in following that stupid one-one draw. A really dramatic thing.
The Atlas Lions looked like they had it for most of it. Hakimi was flying hitting that crossbar. Bart Verbruggen kept making those crucial saves just to keep the Dutch alive. You could feel the tension building, right?
But the Netherlands scored first eventually. In the 72nd minute, Cody Gakpo broke free. Brilliant run. Assist from Summerville. They got the lead. Just as Koeman’s team thought they were going to win it all.
Then Diop. Stoppage time header. From Talbi's cross. A massive one, forcing extra time.
Thirty minutes passed. Nothing changed. Still tied. So penalties. That was where things really got messy.
Bono stepped up for Morocco. He made a vital save after Hakimi missed his shot in the shootout. Then Saibari. He just had to keep it cool and hit the decisive penalty. Atlas Lions gone to the Round of 16.
Morocco moves on now. They face Canada next. The Netherlands just… folded. Lost that chance at the quarter-finals right there.
