Henry Winkler's Time on Arrested Development

Sometimes, the little roles? They end up being the most memorable ones. That’s what happened with Henry Winkler , looking back at his time on Arrested Development . A brief guest spot turned into five years, that kind of thing.

He was talking about it on The Rich Eisen Show , you know? The 80-year-old actor, he talked about joining the series as Barry Zuckerkorn, one of the Bluth family’s weird lawyers. He said he only signed on for like two episodes at first. Then he stayed five years.

“First off,” Winkler mentioned, “the cast was amazing.”

Then there was the length. Like, I was hired for just a couple episodes. And then I stayed for five years. That’s what happened.

And the writing. He really focused on that. “It was written so incredibly well,” he said.

He also gave a nod to Mitch Hurwitz, the creator. The guy constantly finding ways to make the scenes funnier. It wasn't just luck, you know?

Winkler explained how much Hurwitz involved him. There was this feed in his office showing everything they were doing on set. He could see every camera angle. And then you’d say something so funny something you couldn’t believe it and Mitch would run in: “Say this! Say this!” It made things funnier than anything he had written himself.

He didn't pinpoint one favorite moment, though. Just that whole experience felt good. He enjoyed the job. Loved it every day.

So, how long was he actually there? He played Barry Zuckerkorn in thirty-three episodes across all five seasons of Arrested Development . That’s a lot of time on screen. He was part of the original run between 2003 and 2006. Then he came back for the revival stuff, 2013. And again later, from 2018 to 2019.

The show had some big names too. Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Portia de Rossi, Alia Shawkat, Tony Hale, David Cross, Jessica Walter. A whole crew involved.

He also touched on his friendship with Ron Howard. The guy who narrated the show. And who had been around him since Happy Days . That connection felt deep. Winkler reflected about their history, how they were just in the same space at the same moment when he met Ron when he was eighteen and Winkler was twenty-seven. They said there was this string between them. It’s rare, that kind of thing. You don't even have to talk about it.

Arrested Development is streaming on Netflix now.
