Desi Bling: Unspoken Rules, Comments, and Trust

Desi Bling hit Netflix back in May. It showed you what ultra-wealthy Indian expats were up to in Dubai. Satish Sanpal and Tabinda Sanpal, they became the big talking points. Not just because of their lifestyle, but those comments they made really started a fight online.

They recently sat down with Humans Of Bombay . They talked about the noise. How people totally misunderstood what they were trying to say.

One specific thing that caused all the friction was Tabinda’s comment about Satish going to parties with women, often without her there.

Satish spoke up about it. He said there were a lot of things in the show, stuff Binda or he said, and people just took the wrong meaning.

He brought up the party thing again. Apparently, Tabinda had mentioned that Satish goes to parties. But then he added some context. She said it’s okay if he hangs out with different girls. Not if he’s always with the same one every week. That’s what she meant. It wasn't what people thought it was. He just meant normal social stuff.

“Today,” Satish said, “if you go to any club or restaurant, there are girls there. It’s not that there are no girls.” He paused there. “If someone says hi, or I talk to a girl, or there’s a group of people, what is wrong? Everyone should know their limits. People read it like I was saying partying with different girls was some kind of good thing. My message wasn't that at all.”

Tabinda had a different take on things entirely. She said the way people interpreted her remarks really surprised her. “I’m not a party person,” she explained. “It’s my choice. No one forces me to go. Satish doesn’t force me. I don't like it, but Satish likes partying.”

She then shifted focus to the idea of being around people. “If someone works from morning till night and then goes to a party on Saturday, what’s the problem? If there’s a group of people with him and girls too, what’s wrong in that?” She added something about friendship that you can have friendships with girls too.

Then she got to the core issue, the implication behind it all. “What I meant was,” Tabinda said, “if someone is drinking with you, if everyone is sharing a bottle together, what’s wrong there? But if you are partying with the same person? That means an affair. No wife will tolerate that. Whether you give her forty kilos of gold or a hundred kilos of gold. That’s what I meant.”

She followed that up by talking about Satish himself. She brought up something important, this feeling of security. “I am secure because Satish’s best habit, which I think is the best thing about him, is he doesn’t hide anything from me. He doesn’t hide anything from anyone. To his staff, to his wife, to his parents. He has nothing to hide. I trust my husband. I know when he goes out, he won’t hide anything because he isn't doing anything wrong. I have one hundred percent security.”

It felt like a complete pivot. From the social observation to absolute personal trust.

And just for context on who was in that picture? Desi Bling featured Karan Kundrra and Tejasswi Prakash. Then you had Satish Sanpal and Tabinda Sanpal, Rizwan Sajan, Adel and Sana Sajan, Pamala Serena, Dyuti Parruck, Irina Kinakh, Lailli, and Alizeh Mirza all involved. A whole cast of characters dealing with these kinds of unspoken rules behind the glamour.
