Akshay Kumar on Comedy, Filmmaking, and Welcome To The Jungle

Akshay Kumar talked about comedy today. He said it’s always been hard to make people laugh. But now, in this social media age? It's gotten way tougher. Everyone sees funny reels, memes, stand-up acts constantly.
He was gearing up for the release of Welcome To The Jungle , part of that long-running franchise. It hits theaters Friday.
“It’s become much more challenging,” he told PTI in an interview. He pointed out there are reels, memes, comedy content everywhere now. But comedy itself? That river never dries up. There are so many kinds of it physical stuff, situational humor, slapstick, dark jokes.
The 58-year-old actor felt movies aren't the only thing people watch for entertainment anymore.
He looked at how people consume things. If you open Instagram, memes and funny videos just flood in every day. There are tons of comedy shows, comedians making fresh stuff. But getting people to actually laugh? That’s still the hardest part.
Akshay admitted he has huge respect for stand-up comedians. Standing there alone, trying to make an audience laugh that takes real skill. It's incredibly difficult.
Welcome To The Jungle itself is about gangsters, criminals, and weird characters bumping into each other in some jungle border area. It starts as a film shoot thing, but it turns into this mess of absurd misadventures involving crime, confusion, and action.
And he’s leading a massive cast for it. Over thirty actors involved Suneil Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Raveena Tandon, Arshad Warsi, Lara Dutta, and more.
When talking about the trailer that just came out, there were some self-deprecating moments in it. Akshay actually enjoyed being the center of the joke.
“I think making fun of yourself is better than making fun of someone else,” he mused. If you make fun of another person? Not much joy there. But joking about yourself? That feels healthier.
He brought up a scene from the film where Jackie’s character says something, and Suniel replies with a joke about people watching flop movies. The director and writer told him that line. He immediately said, “It’s lovely. Do it.” Why should he object? Everyone has seen flop films. There’s no real issue in accepting that. That's what made the joke land well.
He even mentioned having fun playing a faded star from Bhojpuri cinema for this project. Before shooting some songs, he watched about thirty to forty Bhojpuri songs. He wanted to get the feel of their style, their rhythm, how they performed.
What he figured out was that these performers bring serious energy. There’s just freedom in the way they do it. No holding back. That energy needs to flow naturally. He learned a lot just by watching them work.
This franchise started with his 2007 hit of the same name, which had Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Katrina Kaif, and Feroz Khan in it. Then came Welcome Back in 2015.
When asked if these franchise films were a safe thing to bet on? He was pretty clear. It depends entirely on how good the movie is. Not risk, not safe bet. If the film itself isn't good, being part of a franchise doesn't really matter. His recent film, Bhooth Bangla , wasn’t a franchise. God was kind; people liked it. Ultimately, the quality of the film matters most.
People remember the older films, sure. There’s some recall value attached to them. But a movie just has to be good to run. That’s all there is to it.
Welcome To The Jungle is directed by Ahmed Khan. It was produced by Star Studio18, Base Industries Group, Cape of Good Films, and Seeta Films.
