Shiv Sena (UBT) Facing Potential Loss of Office Space in Parliament

The whole situation with Shiv Sena (UBT) facing potential loss of office space in Parliament complex seems to be boiling over. Six Lok Sabha MPs have actually jumped ship, joining Eknath Shinde’s camp within the party structure.

But here’s the rub: Speaker Om Birla hasn't made any call yet about this merger. Still waiting for a decision.

Things got tense when some of the MPs tried to push back on that silence. Arvind Sawant and Anil Desai actually met with the Speaker in Parliament on Wednesday, trying to get something moving. They were basically asking him not to decide anything without hearing their side first.

Desai spoke up after that meeting. He told them the Speaker assured them everything would be handled strictly by what’s written in the Constitution. That whole bit about Schedule 10 came up fast. It clearly states that even if a group has two-thirds of the seats, they can't just join another party on their own terms. They pointed out, naturally, that all nine MPs who were elected back in 2024 had won under the Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray symbol. The Speaker needed to ensure justice was done then.

Sawant added something else too. He mentioned they’d already sent a representation earlier when those six people left the party. They asked him to protect the Constitution if anyone tried to approach him with this issue. And again, they wrote in asking that whatever happened next, their voice would need to be heard before any final decision was made. Sawant said he got time today and apparently hadn't received any letters from those rebel MPs yet.

It’s a messy situation behind the scenes. The list of MPs who actually joined the Shinde faction on Monday is:

  • Sanjay Haribhau Jadhav
  • Bhausaheb Rajaram Wakchaure
  • Omprakash Bhupalsingh Nimbalkar
  • Sanjay Dina Patil
  • Sanjay Uttamrao Deshmukh
  • Nagesh Bapurao Patil

The core issue, you know, is party strength in the Lok Sabha. That's what determines where they get their space inside Parliament. It’s a key factor there.

Shiv Sena (UBT) initially had nine seats from the 2024 elections. Now, if those six MPs actually merge with the Shinde side and that merger gets recognized, the party’s effective strength could drop down to just three. That's where things get really precarious.

Usually, parties need five or more members to be allotted office space inside Parliament. So, if this merger goes through and their numbers shrink below that threshold, there’s a real possibility a genuine chance that Shiv Sena (UBT) could lose its spot altogether. It hangs in the balance now.
