The Disconnect Between America's Image and Global Sentiment

That whole line about Trump saying foreign leaders assured him America was the hottest country anywhere it just rings hollow now. It’s that image of the world’s ultimate destination, the place everyone wants a selfie at, where you invest and get influence.

But it’s comically disconnected from what people are actually feeling about him these days.

You see this thing: the 2026 Global Attitudes Survey from Pew. It’s been tracking global opinion on America for ages, over twenty years now. And the picture that emerges is sharply negative regarding Trump himself. The median shows only about twenty-three percent of adults feel confident in his leadership of world affairs. That’s a low number.

It spreads across thirty-six nations. Nearly every foreign policy issue tested Iran, for example people just disapprove of how he's handling things. Seventy-four percent disapproval in Iran alone.

And the trade stuff? Tariffs. People really dislike those policies globally. Especially where the ties are deep. Think about the UK, India, Canada, Japan. The sentiment is running pretty cold there. We’re talking 27% approval in the UK, maybe 18% in India. It gets worse down the line with Mexico and Germany too. Eight percent approval in Germany.

Israel seems to be an outlier, though. They give the US a much higher rating eighty-one percent favorable there. And some African nations still view things positively, even when Washington isn't paying much attention to them. India is another spot where confidence has definitely slipped. It dropped from fifty-one percent back in '25 down to thirty-nine percent this year.

The drop is really stark in places like Canada. That’s a huge one. Confidence in the US? It fell from eighty-three percent during the Biden years to just thirty-five percent now. A steep erosion for the closest neighbor, the biggest trading partner.

Across Europe, it’s turned quite hostile. France, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy roughly three-quarters of them are showing negative views now. Germany went from eighty-three down to thirty-nine. Sweden dropped from eighty-three to thirty-one. It feels like a genuine diplomatic strain is building up.

These shifts weren't just abstract. You saw them at forums like the G-7, tensions were really visible there. And honestly? If you ignore Trump’s usual habit of tuning out foreign opinion and relying on personal flattery which he does constantly the global disapproval would be easier to dismiss. But that doesn't make it any less worrying when domestic sentiment is mirroring this decline.

Inside the US, things are running parallel. Polling shows a real weakness there too. Nate Silver’s average puts Trump’s net approval at minus eighteen point nine. Worse than where he started in his first term. One pollster put his approval at just thirty percent an all-time low for them. And when you look at the economy? Only twenty-six percent approve of how he’s managed it; seventy percent disapprove.

So, what we end up with is this strange split. On one hand, Trump spins this narrative: America is the place everyone wants to be. The ultimate prize. But on the other hand, these global surveys and domestic polls show a reality where confidence in US leadership has faded, trust among allies is wearing thin.

The paradox remains. The US is still the biggest economy. It still has those massive military alliances holding things together. It’s still central to global affairs. But the Pew findings force you to see a difference between sheer influence and actual popularity. America might still dominate the stage. But it seems increasingly less the country the world is actually eager to embrace right now.
