Alka Yagnik on Padma Bhushan and Health Issues

Alka Yagnik opened up about her health issues while talking about the Padma Bhushan she just received. She got the honour from President Droupadi Murmu on June 23rd.

A video showed her being helped onto the stage for the recognition, and honestly, it made a lot of people worry about how she was doing.

She put some words out there in that note. She said she had mostly stayed away from the spotlight over the last couple of years because of health problems. Avoiding public appearances, that’s what she did. But now? She’s slowly coming back. She wanted to be there to accept it.

“For the last two years,” she wrote in her message, “I kept myself away from the spotlight, from showing up publicly, and from sharing much of my life. A lot of you knew I was dealing with some tough health stuff. Your love, your prayers, all that support it stayed with me every single step.”

Then she talked about the award itself. Receiving the Padma Bhushan today felt really humbling. It wasn't just about her name on it. She said it belonged to everyone who listened to her music, carried her songs around, and stuck by her through everything, the good times and the hard parts.

“Today,” she wrote, “as I stepped out for one of the highest civilian honours in the country the Padma Bhushan I felt so much gratitude. It’s deeply humbling. My name is there, but it really belongs to every listener who let my voice into their lives, carried my songs across generations, and stood with me through all this.”

She then shifted focus to the people she was thanking. She mentioned the President, Droupadi Murmu. The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. The Ministry of Home Affairs. The Government of India for giving her this honour. She accepted it humbly. Thank you for the warmth, the kindness, the faith over these years. She carried all that with her.

“I didn’t just accept an award today,” she said. “I felt the love of millions who were part of my journey. Thank you.”

But there's more going on behind the scenes. She is battling sensorineural hearing loss, something she only publicly brought up in 2024 after a viral attack hit her. It’s not fully recovered, and it’s still causing difficulties.

She mentioned that this condition has messed with her professional life too. Composers sometimes reach out now and then. But she just can't do the work right now. “Composers approach me now and then,” she said in an interview a few months ago on NDTV. “But I am not able to do it.” It’s just… hard.
