House of the Dragon Season 3 Premiere Reaction and Analysis

Nearly two years of waiting. House of the Dragon Season 3 finally dropped on June 22, 2026. The first episode hit India at 6:30 AM IST. It started heavy. Right into the deep end of the Dance of the Dragons the Battle of the Gullet.
That opening was pure chaos. Blood . Fire . Shattered fleets. And one death that just sticks with you, something you can’t forget. Team Black technically won, sure. But it felt like a Pyrrhic win. The cost? It was just too much. Enormous.
The whole thing immediately ramped up the civil war between Team Black and Team Green. That battle wasn't clean at all. It was a messy collision of naval fighting, dragonfire, and pure personal tragedy. Both sides were wrecked.
Tyland Lannister got caught in the middle. He looked like he was going to die. Then Moondancer stepped in, saving him. Just when things were getting worse, that wild dragon Sheepstealer showed up. It just kept attacking everyone. Throwing the already brutal conflict into even more confusion.
Amid all that madness, Commander Sharako Lohar ordered High Tide burned. It wasn’t just about smashing ships. It felt like an emotional strike aimed squarely at Corlys Velaryon. His house. His legacy tied up in that seat. Wounding him seemed to be the real goal.
And then there was Jason Lannister. He died violently. Beheaded right there on the battlefield during the conflict. That death added another layer of shock, especially as everything else was shifting. Dragons attacking from above, ships burning below it made it clear this war wouldn't get any softer. The cost stays high.
But the real gut punch came later. Jacaerys Velaryon’s death. It felt devastating. Jace was in there already carrying grief for his brother. He was driven by this need for revenge. His dragon, Vermax, got hit. Both crashed into the sea. He managed to escape the wreckage. A brief flicker of hope, then gone.
Soon after he floated free, the enemy archers found him. Multiple arrows. Jace died instantly. That moment became the absolute emotional centre of the premiere. A major blow for Rhaenyra and Team Black. It’s going to change everything for the rest of the season. He was Rhaenyra's son, the heir. He was one of the key young leaders on that side. His loss just fuels the rage. The desperation keeps pushing the war forward.
Who actually won? Team Black technically took the victory in the Gullet. But it wasn't clean. Alyn of Hull killed Admiral Sharako Lohar in single combat. That death broke the morale of the Triarchy forces, forcing them to retreat. So yeah, they won the fight. But at what price?
The Velaryon fleet was decimated. Nearly thirty percent gone. High Tide was burned. Jace’s death left Rhaenyra absolutely broken. Victory arrived only with ruin attached. That's the picture this premiere painted.
And the thing about it is, it messes with the books a bit. Some things shifted in the show versus what we read. Sharako Lohar got killed during the battle by Alyn of Hull. In the book? He lives through that conflict. Jason Lannister’s end was also different. In the novel, he gets beheaded before the main naval action starts. In the series, it happens right in the middle of the chaos. Tyland Lannister’s fate is still a bit murky from the book thrown overboard during the mess. The show gives him that moment where Moondancer intervened and let him escape.
These changes suggest things are shifting. Season 3 might keep the big emotional fallout, but it’ll be reshaping some of those specific events from the source material. It's still a war, just a different kind of war unfolding right in front of us.
So when is the next part? After that first massive blast of blood and fire, we expect the usual rhythm. Weekly releases are likely. Every Monday, 6:30 AM IST for India, same time for the US. The season started with this brutal tone. With Jace gone, the Velaryon fleet wounded, Rhaenyra’s side bleeding despite winning the war is just going to get darker from here. It's going to be a long, bloody road ahead.
