Toxic Workplace Habits: What Needs to Change in the Office

A Mumbai professional recently stirred up a lot of talk about how work actually happens in India. He pointed out some things he thinks have gotten just too normalized in offices across the country. It really hit home for a lot of corporate workers who said, "Yeah, I’ve seen this stuff too."

Vijay Chandola, who is an IIM alum and career coach, brought up three specific behaviors he felt were toxic but somehow accepted now. He called them things that should never be okay in the workplace.

The first thing he pointed out was managers and employees just wearing extreme overwork like it’s some kind of badge of honor. He talked about bragging about staying up until four or five in the morning just to get something done, treating burnout like some achievement.

Then there's the public shaming part. He brought up screaming at people really telling them things in front of everyone, constantly comparing them, pushing for improvement through that kind of pressure.

The third point he made was about ignoring personal space completely. He mentioned how workplaces often just don’t care about boundaries. Calling people incessantly when they are on leave, sick, grieving, or dealing with a personal emergency. Like the company owns you and your time.

He ended up saying none of this is acceptable. None of it should be okay. And he added that if you get told to just toughen up or develop a thick skin, remember, the issue isn't you; it’s the people causing the problem.

In his post caption, Chandola summed it up: these workplace habits have been so normalized that people stop questioning them altogether. But shouting around, glorifying burnout, and ignoring personal limits? That's not high performance. It’s just bad culture. We need to expect better.

The post got a lot of attention fast. People started sharing their own messy experiences with toxic environments.

One person shared something about working those late nights constantly in big firms like Big4 and how they actually wear it like a trophy, a sign of pride. Another comment mentioned that managers would just tell people to stand by the door and stop anyone logging out without hitting targets. And yeah, someone else said they basically gave in and got fired for it.

It sounds like there’s a lot of stuff underneath all that corporate talk that nobody really talks about. Just real experiences happening day to day.
